During Covid I bought some 12 ga Federal Shells from the internet, 2 3/4" 1145 fps, 1 oz....reasoning I could shoot these from 2 1/2" chambered Damascus barrel SxS.

They were rusty - clearly somebody cleaning out their barn. Today my son tried using them in the 870 and they stuck over and over again. The ejector is tearing the rim off the cartridges. See photos. I put this down to the rust.

I then shot them in the Reilly hammer gun 2 1/2" chambers with extractors; they worked but still were "sticky." The kick was significant and I hesitate to use then with 130 year old wood.

What to do? Ditch them? Take a wire brush to the brass?

If you indeed do wish to press them into service, you can take some emery & polish them up a bit, maybe whilst you are watching TV and if your wrist will allow it. If they were Bismuth or Winchesters w/ Grex Buffer, I would invest a little sweat equity on them. Hopefully Hause can make a stab @ the pressure.

No way I would shoot those loads in a 2 1/2 inch damascus gun. I'll bet the pressure they generate is above what most consider to be reasonable. The short chamber only makes it higher. The problem is that Federal doesn't publish pressures. We only know that it's below the 11,500 SAMMI standard. That sharp recoil is bad for the wood on your old hammergun. Clean them up with steel wool and shoot them in the 870.

B&P makes 1 oz. and 7/8 oz. loads called Competition One that are about 6,500 psi and are readily available on the internet

He has been told this more than once.
