I took my wife's 20 ga. 1901 Williams Evans out of storage for an outing this last weekend. It has not seen light of day since I posted this line 9 years ago, when we explored virtually its entire history:

Thank you for the link to this interesting thread.

I wonder if the General meant to say the action sides were “silvered” (i.e. polished - the gun trade sometimes uses the term “coin finished”).

A magnet will confirm that they are not made of silver, but it is possible though unlikely that the action was silver plated.
