![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](http://i.imgur.com/UucfUfih.jpg) Day 1. Long day (12,300 steps) ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](http://i.imgur.com/JSRNbl7h.jpg) The tools of the trade ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](http://i.imgur.com/vyA1ggzh.jpg) My reward at the end of the day (3 of them, one for each bird, none of which I killed), my guiding skills have clearly improved).

The 870 is my truck gun Ted. He still has that dainty little J. Graham but he won't get here until later today. The day before the opener here, down in the deepest and darkest part of the forest.. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](http://i.imgur.com/4Y9mTogh.jpg) ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](http://i.imgur.com/glJ9Grjh.jpg) Road birds, 870 fodder.

My opening day was a little longer, but less productive. I covered 18,970 steps while Dusty covered quite a few more. A nice 70 F with sun, made it plenty warm, but not unpleasant. We heard 5 grouse, laid eyes on 2 of them, and shot at none of them. But we saw some interesting things along the way. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/R9OYQEo.jpg) ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/vJ6lzvy.jpg) An intriguing pile of mysterious fish bones multiple hundreds of yards from the river. There were at least three of them all next to each other. They were probably 2-3 lb fish when they were alive. But what were they and how did they all get here? I can only guess. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/TSZi6MA.jpg) ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/ZQX3CBA.jpg) ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/XdbnVAO.jpg) Lots of different kinds of mast out there right now. These are pretty tasty. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/3MraaMK.jpg) I drove to my planned site for next week's woodcock opener and found this. Not too happy with that, and I can't see what there is log up there. I will have to find my woodcock elsewhere. [img] https://i.imgur.com/eezFG5o.jpg?1[/img] And this was a bit of a surprise, given my location. But very cool. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/KuBrBE2.jpg) ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](https://i.imgur.com/4xN1tmk.jpg) My reward was a bottle of Coke on the way home and a flat iron steak soaked in equal parts Lagavulin, soy sauce, and my own maple syrup, grilled to 113F, and sliced thin. Pretty good. Looks like a pair of spruce grouse there, Lloyd. I would have taken one home. They are way under rated.

Brent: Now that you mention it, those are Sprucies. The dark barring on the chest plumage is the clue for me. This one isn't. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](http://i.imgur.com/2NinJaZh.jpg) It was a road bird evening here (before the opener the next day). I counted 7 on the ride home Friday night. Finally got one to cooperate yesterday. ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](http://i.imgur.com/9VZBTQ3h.jpg) Odd tail configuration, eh? Also... ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](http://i.imgur.com/nErfPR2h.jpg) Aurora Borealis here last night. Not as dramatic as it can be, but still neat (it's been awhile since I'd last seen it).

How is it you walk 18K steps and burn 936 calories and I walk 12K and only burn 164? My iPhone app is tricking me, reverse psychology to encourage me to walk further.
Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.
