The open tang is a pain pulling it out of a sleeve or in a case and having to make sure it is sitting on the down side. Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.

There's really no reason to leave the top lever "open", to the right, when casing a gun. It's super easy to depress the trip pin/button to release it to center. Releasing it also relieves the spring of some of it's tension. May God bless America and those who defend her.

Ted Schefelbein Sidelock Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 10,720 Likes: 1357 mpls, mn.	On the aforementioned Italian and Spanish guns, the lever returns to center when the barrels are removed. You have to push the lever over to the right to reassemble either gun. Best, Ted
