Still trying (unsuccessfully) to get Imgur to revert to the old system where the picture rather than the link appears in the post.

Holland and Holland’s .240 Apex appeared in 2 different forms. Rimless (in fact Belted Rimless) for Mauser actions, and Flanged for doubles and possibly an occasional single shot.

For those who can be bothered to click the link above, note the contradiction in terms in the 2 middle boxes in this mixed lot. They seem to have escaped the factory with a printing error, and I wonder if a magazine rifle owner, miles from anywhere, was left snarling in frustration?

I've seen an H&H single in 240 some years ago and it was one gorgeous rifle. I can't remember if it was a Holland Woodward or another model - I was too busy wiping the drool off my face to take notes.

I know of two H&H falling block rifles in .240 flanged, one is a Woodward(pictured on the back cover of the Winfer book), the other is a small frame Webley 1902 action(the round breech block) that had a safety added to it.

I have been think about a build in that caliber, change the bullet diameter to .243" from .246" and it would be pretty handy. Leaning more towards a 6.5x53R and the 140 grain bullet instead.

The 6.5x53R is an excellent cartridge, and with a greater versatility in bullet weights compared to the .240 Flanged.

If you want a rimmed .243 wouldn’t a cartridge based on the .303 case be a simpler way to go (I think the Australians have wildcatted it) and I seem to remember a 6mm rimmed being a factory load in Europe.

Do you mean the 6x62R Frères ? Fine cartridge, well designed; very superfluous, absolutely dead.

No, I was talking about the 6.5 Dutch mannlicher cartridge, known as the .256 in the UK.

I am very much aware that this is what you had referred to (Parabola also did). And indeed this is a fine ex-military (Romania as well as the Netherlands) and equally famous civilian cartridge. The NRA museum also houses a fine Camp Perry match rifle in this caliber.

However, Parabola's own question or musing had referred to an unnamed European "6mm rimmed" cartridge. And I found it finally, about 84 years earlier than the 6x62R Frères. It is the rare 6x58 R Förster around the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, maybe best comparable to the old 6mm Lee Navy.

P.S.: its rimless brother, the 6x58 Förster, was much used by the last Kaiser (Wilhelm II.).
