I bought this gun at an auction and it will most likely be used as a banquet gun, a prize gun at a clays shoot, or a raffle gun for our RGS Chapter.

The description from the auction house was minimal, so it didn't attract a lot of bids:

Quote
Description:

12 GA Serial # 4314 Barrel 30 C&R

Categories: Firearms

Manufacturer: J Dougall

Model: Side by Side

Action: SxS Shotgun

Caliber/Gauge: 12 GA

Serial Number: 4314

Barrel: 30

It's a 2 1/2" extractor gun, J.D. Dougall & Sons West Nile St. Glasgow on the rib.

Very shootable modern dimensions: 14" LOP, 1 1/2" DOC, 2" DOH, a nudge of cast off; other than being a bit too short for me, I'd have no problem shooing it.

6 lbs., 11 oz, Balance point just in front of the hinge pin.

Barrels are very good, I suspect a refinish.

An oddity with numbers: Number on the tang: 4314; number on rib under barrel, and front of barrel flats: 22458. Not sure what's going on there.

I find the locks interesting - and I am wondering if that will help establish how old this gun is?

A different number from the Serial No. on the tang:

The same number is on the bottom rib above the barrel flats; picture below.

A different number on the barrel latch for some English guns, IE Purdey, means a way to tell who made the barrels.
Seen it before.
How is it choked

J.D. Dougall information from the Internet Gun Club is here
https://doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=399162
and
https://www.internetgunclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=213

It was originally proved 1904 - 1925 (I think the 2 1/2" was marked at reproof), then reproved (Crown over R) by the date code of N C in 1987

[Linked Image from photos.smugmug.com]

It may have been slightly honed on L
The original bore R was 13 = .710 - .718 and at reproof was .710"
L was 13/1 = .719 - .728 and at reproof was .728"

3 TONS would be for a max. service pressure of about 9000 psi

Please check carefully for cracks at the apex of the R lockplate inlet.

I expect the 22458 belongs to whichever Birmingham maker built the gun. The number on the trigger guard would be the one assigned by Dougal.

Someone will be along shortly to remind us whose patent those coil-spring locks are.

I didn't check chokes before I left my FFL holder. Dumb move on my part. I have a gauge on the way to get an approximation.

Thank you - I've never been any good at deciphering English proofs - this is only the 3rd one to make it into the house.

I have an Army & Navy BLNE to figure out next.

May I ask what prompted this? I haven't seen anything, but could have easily missed something.

Good thought, thanks.

Have probably seen too many 'Long Cracked Smiths', and may only be the wood grain, but worth removing the lockplate and checking
