I came across an early gunmaker named Thomas Cartmell of Doncaster while perusing through the older Holts Auctions. I was interested re: his surname and my family name. It appears he was in business from about 1799 to 1829 from what I could glean from Google and the published book, British Gunmakers, Vol. II, Birmingham, Scotland and the Regions, by Nigel Brown.

“Thomas Cartmell, 124 Deangate, Manchester, Lancashire 1799-1803, (poss. same as Thomas Cartmell of Doncaster q.v.).” British Gunmakers, Vol. II, pg. 187, by Nigel Brown.

“Thomas Cartmell, High Street, Doncaster, Yorkshire 1817-1822, Thomas Cartmell & Son s.a. 1827.” British Gunmakers, Vol. II, 187, by Nigel Brown.

Thomas Cartmell apparently died in 1829 at Doncaster, aged 58. Buried in St. George’s churchyard, Doncaster. It appears according to the Holts postings that the guns advertised are dated to circa 1835, so his gunmaking must have continued on with the Son.

Anyway, just thought it was interesting. The 20 bore looks to have been quite nice back in the day with the highly decorated engraving.
