I found that the 12 ga Brownell's dent remover did not quite have reach enough for my 10 gauge bores. I took a plastic shell casing, I think it was a 16 ga ,and fit it snugly over the end of the dent remover like a sleeve, cutting tight rectangular hole in the plastic for the anvil to poke through. The thickness of the casing allowed the dent remover to have enough reach to remove 10 bore dents.

I use a piece of lead to tap the dent rather than a hammer. It’s actually about 1/3 of a Lyman lead ingot. The lead will not compromise the finish of the barrels. Holding the chunk of lead in my fingers helps me feel the movement of the dent rather than holding a hammer handle 6” away from the work.

old time gunsmiths that I have known use/used a Keith type plug set or a mittermeier type expanding plug...

if not careful, one can easily bulge a barrel, when using a hydraulic dent raiser..

keep it simple and keep it safe...
