balance is a part of feeling right...
when a gun or golf club for that matter feels right, it becomes magic...
change that feel and the magic disappears...
keep it simple and keep it safe...

I use WD-40 as a lube on Silvers pads, it works well. 3-in-1 oil turns them to goo. No clue why.

It is lost on some people, no one in particular in mind, that recoil pads are installed on shotguns very often to gain LOP. Out of all my vintage doubles I only have one that is long enough without a leather lace-on pad.
Shooting a gun that is way too short for you is exponentially worse than adding a few ounces to the butt end, IMO. Many longer barreled doubles are a bit muzzle heavy and a few ounces added to the butt improves the handling immensely.
Total weight is insignificant compared to MOI. My big MX8 weighs over 9 lbs. and I can kill any close, fast rabbit target they can throw with it.
May God bless America and those who defend her.

least wise not very far... Even the simplest examples are lost on you, aren't they ed? Let me help you. IF YOU CAN CATCH A FAST CLOSE RABBIT TARGET WITH A NINE POUND GUN, YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE A PROBLEM KILLING A FLUSHING BIRD WITH A SIX POUND GUN WITH A FEW EXTRA OUNCES ADDED TO THE BUTT.

Stan, pls rethink that last post...
It makes you appear to be so self focused and, well, jes plain ignorant...
for example, how much experience do you really have hunting grouse in the dense covers of the appalachian mountains?
keep it simple and keep it safe...

for example, how much experience do you really have hunting grouse in the dense covers of the appalachian mountains? Using the the narrowest example of shotgunnery and applying it to all others, you become self-indicted of ignorance and self-focus, ed. Most experienced shooters know that the weight of a recoil pad has little to no significant effect on a shotgun's dynamics to be noticeable, especially once the gun is anchored to your shoulder when mounted. Stan and I both have many, many years of experience shooting all kinds of shotguns of various gauges, barrel lengths, and stock configurations, with and without recoil pads, at all kinds of game and targets. We know some things because we've done some things, and not having done the grouse thing doesn't refute them. Your opinion on how a recoil pad affects the dynamics of a shotgun is extremely weak. JR

JR It is cute how you jump to Stan's defense. This whole thread it pretty interesting for what it says about some of you. I bought a nice Cashmore fresh out of England a while back. It needed a buttpad for extra length which required that I cut the original wood butt that was checkered without a buttplate of any kind. And there under a very carefully disguised plug embedded in the checkering, was a lead weight. Exactly 1 ounce. How interesting that the British maker of that gun felt that it needed that ounce to get just the right something. Of course, what do British gunmakers know about the guns they make. All just junk, I guess. A leather covered microcell, without that lead, was nearly identical in balance. Slapping on a 7 oz Silvers would definitely have messed it up. But again, those English don't know anything about balance - only Americans can know that. That's why a Rem 870 is the superior of any English gun ever made. Where is Johnny now? You guys could not be much more hypocritical. But I know you will try. Now stick together.

hey Roberts an the rest of you flat landers...
don't tell us ridge runners an rock climbers bout grouse guns, unless you spend a few years climbin two hours or so up a mountain...
then four hours or so, fightin your way thru blow downs and brier patches and be lucky enough to put up as many birds as it takes to make you feel the effort is worth the challenge...
and then there is the trip down the mountain...when your legs feel numb and your knees seem like they are full of jelly and tacks...
and if you have to abandon your nine pound boat anchor on the way down, think of it as a learning experience...
keep it simple and keep it safe...
