In the 1980s my go-to gunsmith was veteran gunmaker MV Highsmith. I expressed to him a desire to get a subgauge muzzleloading shotgun. A few months later this gun arrived. It’s a 15 bore with 28” barrels by Charles Osborne and locks marked GH Blood, Memphis. He had completely disassembled the gun and refinished everything. The breech plugs, lock plates, hammers and small parts were beautifully color casehardened and the barrels were freshly browned. The wood was refinished with his trademark alkanet root red finish. I shot it a lot when I first acquired it. It has harvested many doves and quail, several pheasants and a couple grouse. The stock has modern dimensions of 14 x 1-3/4 X 1-3/8” with neutral cast. The bores are .688 and I use 14 gauge Circle Fly components in it. I mostly have used an ounce of shot and an equal volume of powder. All the loading components I have for it are included. As you can see by the photos, I have taken good care of it. I always used hot soapy water for cleaning, followed by thorough drying and bore butter to preserve it. I don’t shoot black powder much any more, so I think it’s time to pass this one along. $3500 shipped. Contact Allan at 423-262-9394.
