Has anything as massive as the lead ban - impacting millions, in this generation and successive ones, and costing billions - ever been done on such slender evidence.

Perhaps you recall the ban on fluorocarbons due to the hole in the ozone layer? An entire generation of them were fazed out over the hand wringing wet pants brigade, who, were duped by the people who held the soon to be expired patents for the manufacture of same. They went on to produce less efficient versions with brand, spanking, new patents, that monopolized production of same.

Nobody was ever able to prove that R11, or R12 behaved any different in the atmosphere than R22 and 134a that came along later.

But, the patent holders have made plenty of money off of both of them.

Best,
Ted

I read yesterday that in the UK it is necessary to have an official government based license to own a television. It is a mandatory fee for anyone watching live broadcasts, and is roughly the equivalent of 232 American dollars (annually?).

From the Wikipedia history of it:

"When television broadcasts in the UK were resumed after a break due to the Second World War, it was decided to introduce a television licence fee to fund the service."

Who decided, the citizens/subjects, the Queen, or Parliament? I'll bet I know the answer to that question already.

A tiny amount compared to what tariffs cost me just last week. We know who decided that, the King.

Stanton Hills, yes we have a licence fee to watch BBC live broadcasts and the online steaming of the same. It is totally discretionary and if you only watch other channels by subscription or whatever you don't need to pay for it. It also pays for all our BBC local radio and our many national radio channels which individually specialise is everything from 24 hour pop music to current events, news, comedy, classical music et al. But we don't have to watch a single advert (other than for programs on that service) and we have access to the whole back catalogue of everything that the BBC has ever broadcast. We also get the BBC news and all other public service programs FOC. Along with 23000000 other British citizens, I think it is an excellent service and well worth the money.
So wind your neck in and don't criticize what you don't understand.

If y'all like it, fine, Toby. It's not for me, however. It is a tax, plain and simple. We fund our public broadcasting by donations, not taxes.

And, I had read the facts you stated, so I think I understood it pretty well. And, I will assume that it is an annual tax.

Thanks so much for the reply.

Actually Stan, our tax dollars have been used for decades to fund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which includes NPR and PBS. A recent Trump Executive Order put a stop to it.

A couple weeks ago, Trump succeeded in fulfilling another campaign promise, because they had turned into virtual Liberal Left propaganda machines. They also depended upon donations, but the huge loss of taxpayer funding has apparently led to the announcements of closure of them in the near future:

https://www.npr.org/2025/07/18/nx-s1-5469912/npr-congress-rescission-funding-trump

It's also astonishing to see that many Liberal Left NGO's are shutting down or struggling to survive since Trump put the brakes on USAID spending. It appears that Democrats had been using our tax dollars not only to fund an invasion of Illegal Aliens, but to also fund work against Conservative causes and candidates. Not far from Josef Stalin saying, "When we hang the capitalists they will sell us the rope we use." Democrats have been using our own tax dollars to screw us.

I enjoyed a lot of Public Broadcasting content in the past, but their Liberal Left Democrat bias had become undeniable and impossible to stomach in the last decade or so. I am not sorry to see them go, and we have more than enough Liberal Left biased News organizations that we don't need to have our taxes funding another. Of course, Democrats are livid about this.

By the way, from what I've seen from the BBC, I wouldn't exactly classify them as an unbiased or Conservative News source these days, and wouldn't expect them to oppose the UK Lead Ammo Ban either. I couldn't imagine paying any fee or tax to bring them into my home. Here is just one of their anti-lead ammo reports:

Trump Promises made... Trump promises kept! This is what I voted for.

Voting for anti-gun Democrats is dumber than giving treats to a dog that shits on a Persian Rug

I stand corrected, keith. And, my apology to Toby for being wrong about that aspect of it.

Had I known NPR and PBS were tax funded I would have disdained them even more than I did before knowing. They've had a liberal bias for as long as I can remember, and I have been conspicuous in my absence for all that time.

Great news that it is no longer the case.

I've been scrolling the channels in the past and seen the "fund-a-thons" that Georgia Public Broadcasting uses to supplement the tax dollars and thought that they were fully funded by them. Wonder if they ever mention that whatever you send them in donations goes on top of the taxes you've already been charged. I seriously doubt it. I've got no problem with people giving them their money in donations. . . . . if they want to throw their money down the hole in an outhouse that's their business too.

You aren’t going to pay a penny in tariffs. Whoever buys your wares will do that.

Typical, made up leftist reason to throw shade on the vast improvements today, versus what the dementia patient served up for us.

Ted

You really do not understand the used gun market Ted. If you think I can just add 15% to my prices and everything sells, then you should stick to buying Mossberg pumps.

I write the tariffs checks Ted, nobody else does. Pay attention please.

Trust me, my bottom has not not improved since the King has taken his throne, I'm winding down the import side of my business and expect a huge loss of income this year because it.

The good years under Biden allowed me to pay off every debt I had, I will be fine but the idea that this is an improvement is pure rubbish.

Wholesale costs don't matter! Who knew?

Your brilliance, Ted, could light up the world.
