Your results may vary, but…
My 28 gauge is a Darne V19 with 26” tubes and a semi pistol grip stock. The only ammunition I’ve run in it is Rios and Winchester 28 gauge loads, and what surprises me every time is how the little shit let’s you know, in no uncertain terms, that it has gone off. 5 3/4 pounds or so.
Lightest recoil in my world is a 20 gauge Remington 1100 All Weather LW.

But I don't own an automatic scattergun anymore...and I doubt that I'll buy one now.
There used to be a like "new" 20 Auto 5 up there that was my father-in-law's (I'll have to chat with my MIL).
I'd be interested to see if a .410 will actually work on the grouse up there (it wouldn't be my 1st choice, but I know that the 28 tubes on that little gun work just fine).

The .410 tubes on this gun are heavily choked IIRC so...maybe it'll be OK after all? I noticed when I was shooting it on clays (right after I'd bought it) that some shells worked much better than the others. AA Winchesters worked fairly well and cheaper Rios didn't. I suppose that holds true for hunting as well?
I suspect that the overall weight of the gun will work better for my buddy as well (sadly, it seems that the years have not been entirely kind to him).

Gauge is not what is important, as others have noted already, weight of load, speedof load, and weight of gun is what creates felt recoil. As already said a recoil operated gun will further reduce felt recoil.
Were I in your friends situation I would go with light loads as already noted by earlier posters moving at about 1100 FPS from a six pound or so gun.
I would stay at 16 or 12, maybe 20 ga

Hey Lloyd! Yep sixes, the universal shot size! Especially if you're walking them up. He'll have fun, maybe get some birds and not get beat up! I had good luck with the "measly" .410 away back then! Not to start a flurry of opinions' I think taking a few off a limb is OK in this situation!

Most of the limb birds I see up there are Sprucies (& I tend to leave them alone) but you're right here, getting something in this particular case is far better than getting nothing.

Sounds like Spruce Grouse don't "eat" as good as Ruffed. Do they feed on evergreen buds or something like that which imparts an undesirable flavor to the meat?
