Does anyone know if the "Charles Daly Fine Damascus" marked barrels were used on the Diamond Quality guns? I had assumed that the barrels on these guns were all stamped "Charles Daly Best Damascus" .
My 165 grade 20 gauge has 'Fine Damascus" and a friend called telling me he is looking at a Diamond Quality gun marked "Fine Damascus".
Inquiring minds want to know.

I think the answer to your question is no. The Diamond Quality markings were relegated to the higher grade guns. That is not to mean that the Fine Damascus was something to think of as inferior, but does mean that the higher grade guns were "more special". Remember that the grading of the Lindner Daly guns were made relative to the engraving, ejectors or not, and the selling price of the guns was what designated th "grade". None were cheap. None were inferior. All were Best guns but the embellishment of one over the other was the most important criteria. The most important thing to think about in a Lindner Daly is that all were superior and none were ordinary. Just that some were more costly in embellishement and were prettier than others,:} Best, John

As usual, Daryl, you have the cool toys.

C Man,
I took a quick look at three damascus diamond quality guns and all were similarly marked, "CHARLES DALY EXTRA FINE DAMASCUS DIAMOND QUALITY". The "FINE DAMASCUS" rib inscription is normally associated with Prussian Dalys models of lower embelishment than the "diamond quality" gun.
That said, never say never, but I would expect to see the "extra fine" marking on the rib of a diamond quality gun - along with the "diamond quality" inscription.

Ken. Thanks. That was what I thought was the case, and it is what I have seen. That's why I posed the question. These were not, I believe, one-off custom ordered guns. So the likelyhood that Daly ordered them with a 'lower grade' barrel set struck me as strange. I'll post if I can get pictures.

C-Man: You posted,"These were not, I believe, one-off custom ordered guns. So the likelyhood that Daly ordered them with a 'lower grade' barrel set struck me as strange." I can agree with only part of this statement. We see many Lindner Dalys that just might have been special ordered for a particular buyer. I agree that most were probably built to certain required specs but some are more than ordinary and seem to be individual. Best, John

I agree with John. There are original Prussian Dalys with features that differ from the strict catalog specs. For example, I recently inspected a fairly minty 1928 vintage Daly model 185 with extractors when the SD&G period catalog only listed ejector guns (with no option for extractors.) Someone wanted an extractor gun apparently and got it!
I think the Daly database information bears out that while many/most Prussian Dalys were made to catalog "spec" if a customer wanted a particular feature, he could get it.

I sometimes miss the little things. Thanks for looking out for me, Higgins! ;-) As you can see they are in fact "extra fine". ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/Marko23/TRrs.jpg) A little jewel I picked up this morning.
