I have a pre 1885 shotgun I’m thinking of selling, would the gun have to be in original condition for a direct ship? Would modifications like sleeved barrels put this in non compliance for direct ship?

Don't bother to ask permission or you'll be sorry you did. Just ship it and forget it. Most ATF types wouldn't know a sleeved barrel even if they were hit over the head with it.

I’ve never heard of anything changing the antique status of a gun. That can happen with a Curio and Relic, but to my knowledge, not whether it is pre-1898 or not.

If it was originally manufactured in or before 1898 it is an "antique firearm" under the Gun Control Act of 1968 (GCA).
I would think that sleeved barrels would have nothing to do with this definition.

The receiver is the "gun", legally. It is still pre99.

ATF did actually take it upon itself to quietly modify the definition of an "antique firearm." It mainly has to do with conversion cylinders and or devices that allow a percussion revolver to fire modern type, center-fire ammunition.

consider this...
legally, it is antique, even with sleeved barrels...
shotguns can be dangerous weapons...
ship to third party, unless person you are shipping to is trusted friend...
otherwise, gun could fall into wrong hands with devastating results...
better safe, than sorry...
keep it simple and keep it safe...

Correct, those are still "antique firearms" based on the fact that they were originally manufactured in or before 1898.
The modification applies to taking a percussion revolver and modifying it to fire modern ammunition.
A Colt Single Action Army, originally manufactured in or before 1898, but can fire modern, .45 Colt ammunition is still an "antique firearm."
A Ruger Old Army percussion revolver, firing loose black powder and ball or bullet via a percussion cap is an "antique firearm."
A Ruger Old Army percussion revolver, with a conversion cylinder installed, allowing it to fire modern, .45 Colt ammunition is now a "firearm" under the GCA.

Funny. I bought a New Model Army Remington black powder during Covid just so I could do that. Kind-of fun to shoot.
So much for that dodge now.
