first, I appreciate all the input. Reviewing this problem, I also shoot a Rizzini BR 550 probably more than the Win 21 and don't recall ever having this problem with that gun. I put 3 new shells of different make into the 21, the Rizzini and an Arrieta and although not scientific, it does appear to be a minute difference in how deep the shells sit. The difference is extremely small though. Letting the hammers down on a block of wood didn't reveal anything as both punches appear the same. I will research getting new springs and have an excellent 'smith to look inside and hopefully solve the problem. I also thought about having the rim cut laser welded.

last time out I had ftf in both barrels. I use an overshot card when loading 12 ga 2 1/2" shells. So I laid the card on top of a reload sitting down in the chamber of the 21. A straight edge will sit flush across the breech, not so with new factory Clever or B&P shells. The brass on AA's is measurably thinner than other shells. So the next step is to look for a different reloadable hull.

It's a pleasure to be on board. I went through shell "bingo" with the guns I previously mentioned. Factory Remington, Fiocchi, Nobel and Clever shells all exhibited sporadic FTF in the guns. Reloaded Remington STS and Gc's as well as Winchester AA's, all using Winchester 209 primers did the same thing. I'd finally had enough and replaced the hammer springs. I polished the hammer struts, installed the new springs and haven't looked back. I feel your pain. Sometimes is just easier to rip the band aid off and get on with life. Good luck.

I had a N. Guyot SXS that had a light primer strike on the right side. (I had just purchased the gun from a dealer.) I tried about 7 different factory and a hand load With a couple different primers. The only ones that performed well were STS and AA factory loads with my handloads firing as well. Herters loads were horrible with the firing pin catching on the primer. Obviously a huge difference in the performance of ammo.

Start with STS factory and experiment from there...
