I have actually wondered from time to time, why our most highly praised sporting writers tend to be stumbling drunks
It is a hallowed American tradition, since yore.
I have no idea whether British field&stream&shooting writers were not also alcoholics, barely functional ones maybe, but they did not create a self-inflated blustering cult around it.
It probably started with Hemingway.

You could have stopped at “I have no idea”.
At least Americans have highly praised sporting writers.
An English writer, on Americans:
“ The essential American soul is hard, isolate, stoic, and a killer. It has never yet melted. — D.H. Lawrence”
Best,
Ted

Self-inflated bluster? Sounds like the Third Reich to me.
