If hobbies were cheap, then we would be making our living off them. They are fun or relaxing for the most part. Ways to challenge ourselves. Fishing, Golf, Shooting, hunting are all ways top go broke while having fun. And never figure out the price per pound for anything you shoot or catch.

Fun isn't cheap now, maybe it never has been.

Driving my 6-mpg car to lunch shortly.

God Bless America!

You are correct.
It never has been.
I started shooting skeet using paperboy money in 1972. It was expensive then.

I just spent 3 hrs at the gun club today listening to retirees complain about cartridges, range fees and health problems.
Not much seems to have changed.

Out there doing it best I can.

i would have to disagree with that, brother. Fun can be cheap. We have just gotten "sophisticated" with what we consider fun. Ever heard the old saw "The only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys"?

Shooting, like we do is fun, but there are consequences. One of them is the cost. Drowning crickets on the bank of a pond trying to catch bluegills used to be fun, too. But, we "grew" above that. Sitting by a river and having a cigar and a sip of bourbon is fun, but not as dramatic as clays breaking. You seem to fish a good deal. Is that not fun? Does it have to be as expensive as joining a club to shoot clays regularly, and doing so?

I strongly decry the notion that fun was never cheap. I also decry the notion that it can't ever be so again. It CAN. We just need to adjust our paradigms so that we can enjoy that which costs less. I spent three and a half hours today having lots of fun shooting nine-ball at the nearest pool room, with two good friends. I wouldn't take anything for that time. For $22 I shot pool all that time, and had an excellent taco salad for lunch. I'd call that cheap fun. Other's mileage may vary.

All these years I taught you were a real ''Shooter'', now I find out you do your ''Shooting'' in a Pool Hall.

Most of my hammer guns are with Damascus barrels, no choke. I like the idea of steel barrels with just a little choke, like IC/Mod. That looks like a nice one, very practical! Gil

Shot again at the club last week 100 sporting clays. The clays, ammo, are only part of it, I have to factor gun club dues too. So can get expensive to go out 2x month. If I could make it a point to go 4x month would bring the costs per round down.

Thought I would shoot more when I retired, has not happen yet, maybe soon, I hope.

Here's what I do to cut costs by 75%. I BOUGHT a clay target thrower, welded it to a 6ft. lenght of 2x2 sq. tubing that fits in my trailer hitch on my truck.
I shoot off the back of my truck were ever I park it. It is adjustable for height, can throw high, medium or low targets. I shoot in various areas on my Farms,
and with different springs on the thrower, can throw out to a good 90 yards. Keep a eye open for clay targets for sale, some times you can pick them up very cheap.
NO high club prices, no waiting to shoot, IF YOU GO TO A CLUB, you can only shoot when they say so, at your place shoot when ever you want to. Shoot 20 targets or 500,
what ever you like or want. ALSO you have to reload your shells, NO WAY I can afford to shoot all factory shells. This trap also throws ''doubles'', so makes for good practice.

I am really not complaining , I know the costs going in. Just saying. I have a nice place to shoot and really enjoy the place and the guys are all nice, for the most part. We have 4 fields for sporting clays, so have some nice choices.

Everything works all the time.
