Robert Ruark "The Brave Quail"
The gauge of the gun is an index to the ability of the man to prove his manhood…If it is a 12-gauge, he is so-so. If it is a 16, he is pretty good. If it’s a 20-gauge, he is excellent, and if it a .410 he is bragging.

Couldn't find a quote about SAs for quail. He did have 2 12g semiautos; a Winchester 59 and a Remington

Robert Ruark's Christmas present from the "Old Man" was a 16g Sauer

which he was still using in Africa

Use enough gun.

Just ‘sayin.

I have actually wondered from time to time, why our most highly praised sporting writers tend to be stumbling drunks.

Best,
Ted

Dorchester is a nice place, been there many times, mostly for clays shooting however. The food there has always been fabulous. I also know Zach (Gutierrez (sp.?)), who runs Forest City Gun Club. He's a serious sporting clays shooter and an all around very nice guy.

28s are a gracious plenty for preserve quail. 410s work too, if you're quick enough.

Enjoyable video. Thanks, Parabola.

I have a few friends that were making Dorchester our regular winter get away shoot, I think 5 years now. I am little surprised they are using repeaters, if I recall correctly we were told only doubles guns, O/U or SxS, for the guides safety. I would recommend the place although we have some quibbles.

It is a hallowed American tradition, since yore.

I have no idea whether British field&stream&shooting writers were not also alcoholics, barely functional ones maybe, but they did not create a self-inflated blustering cult around it.
It probably started with Hemingway.

That video was promoted by Beretta. They used Jonny to sell the autos and he used Beretta to sell TGS. And it benefited Dorchester which is run by a good man. Jonny was also fishing for an invite for wild quail. Hint-hint. Gil

You could have stopped at “I have no idea”.

At least Americans have highly praised sporting writers.

An English writer, on Americans:

“ The essential American soul is hard, isolate, stoic, and a killer. It has never yet melted. — D.H. Lawrence”

Best,
Ted

Self-inflated bluster? Sounds like the Third Reich to me.

Yes. But we shall stay with your very valid question, since you posed it. It is inquieting.

Your mistake is posting that this is simply, an American tradition. This is not the case. To believe that, is, truly lazy thinking.

Who is the German Earnest Hemingway, Robert Ruark, Havilah Babcock, Jim Carmichael, Micheal McIntosh, Gene Hill or Steve Bodio? Would their translated works find an audience here?

Would this writer be a teetotaler?

To be a truly successful outdoor writer, one will discover they need to cater to an English speaking audience. Guy de la Valdene is an example of a rare foreign writer who found success as an outdoor writer who published in his second language, English, rather than his native French.

Guy could knock a few back, just as well as his American counterparts.

I don’t believe it to be an accident that Yasushi Inoue, in his Japanese language novel “The Hunting Gun” chose the image of the hunter, climbing the mountain to make game, using a Churchill double shotgun, with a Setter before him. Not a Continental or Japanese gun or dog, and certainly not German.

He apparently enjoyed his beer and saki.

Best,
Ted
