Hey, folks.

Can anyone tell me more about these marks. I'm guessing their for the tube maker. They'e on a set of bbls for a 28 gauge MacNaughton from 1890.

Not much help but arrows often represented Sheffield’s historical connection to armaments production.
Siemens had steelworks in Sheffield, but I couldn't find the arrow associated with Siemens.

Steel works in Sheffield
https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/sites/...0and%20Steel%20Company%20Records.pdf.pdf

That location was typically used for the mark of the steel source or steel tradename on Belgian and some U.S. makers.

Just off the cuff, I don't think the Brits made many sub-gauges during this period and may have imported all small-bores. There was an exception in the Belgian prooflaw that allowed the makers to send a weapon, devoid of any Belgian proofmarks, in the white(maybe further completed???) to a foreign Proof Facility. If we could see all the areas where touchmarks pool, migrate, wad up, additional info may be garnered.

Bro. Raimey makes a good point. I did look through my collection of Belgian marks and didn't find that one.

Well, I too am looking but haven't found it nor narrowed the pool. Dig might know. A couple months back @ one of the SCI events, or both, he & I were discussing how many sub-gauges the Brits make & you can just about count them on one hand. But we need a little more info to start to mine data in the correct direction.

Thanks for thoughts. The gun's one of these. I doubt it was made outside of the UK.

We should probably investigate steel mills in Scotland
https://cfindlay17.wixsite.com/clydebridge/history-of-iron-and-steel-in-scotla

Lanarkshire Steel Co manufactured Siemens Martin open hearth process steel, but their logo didn't have the arrow.
Nor did the Steel Co. of Scotland
https://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Steel_Company_of_Scotland
but the logo did have SSCL

Well, that move the goals posts a bit and I think McNaughton thought it a novel idea to make say 2 dozen or 2 dozen plus 1/2 dozen of these smallbore for Ptarmigan and other Highland winged creatures and I think the tube length hovered around 24". Again, I would ask Dig & if you want me to ask him I will. Or maybe Trigger?

I have no idea where they sourced their tubes.

There is a decent number of McNaughton Edinburgh gun 28 gauge around, I was told they were used for Woodcock.

Out there doing it best I can.
