…can analytics and statistics explain why Scheifele tripped Steele? Should have let Hellebuyck handle it. Anyways, here’s the game winner.

His dad died suddenly less than 24 hrs previously. Perhaps he wasn’t fully in the game.

Which is why I didn’t slag him or the Jets like I wish I could have.

Game 7 in Toronto tonight. Let’s go Cats.

I actually went to that game with my son in law and 2 granddaughters. Not only was it my first hockey game to attend, but I had never even watched a full game on TV before. My granddaughters are ages 9 and 12 and they were very happy that the Stars won, but I don't think they understood the rules any better than I did. smile

A fun and wholesome game fit for the entire family.

Really liked the Stars when they were led by American and Detroit native Mike Modano.

Will be a good series with Edmonton. Canada’s last hope after the Leafs were mauled by the Panthers.

Wow. A somewhat sober post, at 9:15AM. The 2:30AM stuff isn’t family rated.

Did you get a job?

Best,
Ted

The most frustrating thing to me was that the stadium announcer never gave us any information. There were constant stoppages in play that would lead to a face-off, but he never once told us the call. Considering how difficult it is to see the puck from as far away as we were, I thought he would announce the call and why they were having a face-off, but he never did. Is this normal, or was it unique to Dallas?

Does the average fan see well enough to know what was called without being told, or do they just not care? I would have enjoyed it more if I understood the call instead of just being blasted with loud music.

I have always appreciated how our announcers at Auburn football games play it absolutely straight with no gamesmanship no matter what happened. They simply announce what happened - "Chris Davis returns the missed field goal 109 yards for a touchdown. Final score, Auburn 34, Alabama 28."

Those guys that play hockey have gotta be incredibly tough. I'm gonna watch on TV Wednesday night and try to understand it better.

My family had season tickets to the Jets for many years and I've been watching hockey on TV since the late 1960s. I also used to play. I think what you didn't hear from the announcer at the game is pretty standard. Not saying it should be like that, just what it is. I have zero problem knowing where the puck is and how the play might unfold, but I've been watching for a long time. So it's rare, given the visual advantage of being in the stands, that I am surprised where the puck might go. I already know the most likely directions. About the only time I lose track of the puck is in a crowd scramble in front of the net. I know the puck is in there......just too many bodies to see exactly where. I also know most of the likely reasons why play gets stopped. Sometimes I miss it because it's a relatively new rule and I'm some old fart who likes it the way it used to be! Hahaha. There is an unwritten rule about hockey.....the longer play goes without a whistle, the better the game is to watch.

Most reasons for play stoppage that does not result in a penalty, most fans don't care about. They are usually very minor infractions and play stoppage tends to prevent that minor infraction from giving an advantage. Almost like a do-over. Although there are times, particularly in something like penalty killing, where the opportunity for play stoppage helps the short handed team by taking momentum away from the attacking team.

Much as I enjoy billiards (grew up with a table in my bedroom) I have not got to the point of being able to watch it on TV. I am not a weekend regular in front of the tv wacthing sports as so many are, but as you rightly point out, a competence in a sport vastly increases the likelihood of enjoying watching it.

I'll watch golf and tennis occasionally. Baseball never (never played but I did play cricket) although I like listening to it on the radio and used to have season tickets to the Blue Jays. Basketball.....never. I didn't play it. Football once in a while. Hockey during the playoffs. Alpine skiing I love to watch. Good slalom watersking I could watch for hours. I like watching the competence and knowledge of the sport allows me to appreciate that competence.

And while reruns of sporting events, where the outcome is known, seems pointless to me, I can watch the 1973 Preakness and the 1973 Belmont Stakes endlessly.

Four time nine-ball world champion Johnny Archer grew up and learned to shoot as a kid just a few miles down the road from me. I followed his career, as much as I could watching TV, until he retired from pro level competition. He now shoots local tournaments where I have had the opportunity to get to know him better, and try to learn from his techniques. Billiards has been a fascination for me ever since high school. In college I majored in agriculture and minored in snooker. Spent about as much time in Kendrick's Recreation Center, the local pool hall in Tifton, as I did in class at school.

I played golf in high school and college but lost interest in playing the game as an adult. It's a ritual for my wife and I to watch the closing round of The Masters Golf Tournament, here in Augusta, each April. The Augusta National, where it is held, has to be one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. It's like a paradise.

Why did you have a billy-ards table in your bedroom? Pet moose took up all the room in the den?

Why wouldn't you have a billiards table in your room? That's a dumb question.

Cliff Thorburn, first and only non British World snooker champion used to play at the pool hall my friends and I played at during Uni days in the mid 1970s.

I have a lot of respect for the game of snooker. It seems to me to be a game for gentlemen. I saw lots of money won and lost at the front snooker table at Kendrick's, but never a fight. The rack man pulled a knife out one time and put it to the throat of a mouthy shooter who had called him "Monkey Man" because his ears stuck out. But, there wasn't a fight. wink IMO, snooker is to billiards what FITASC is to clay target shooting.

James, for sheer entertainment find a video of some of the Mosconi Cup, which is held annually, alternating between America and England. It is the American team against the European team and consists of team and individual matches. The audiences are raucous, loud and very much into the competition. I want to go to the Mosconi Cup when it comes back to America in 2026. It was in Orlando last year but I couldn't go. It really looks like a lot of fun. Many fans don face paint and clothes that represent their favorite team's homeland.

That’s crazy! If there’s a flight to Mildenhall I’m going!

Not to interrupt your billy-ards thread but the Canes got rocked in Raleigh tonight.

I am somewhat disappointed though not surprised that supposed ultra-nationalist Canadian James “Canada Jim” canvasback has not updated this thread in my absence. The Stanley Cup finals begin Wednesday in Edmonton, Alberta where the Oilers will host the (Miami) Florida Panthers. Of course as an American-Canadian I am rooting for the the team from Florida, though as I said last January, if a Canadian team wins the Stanley Cup I will be happy it is Edmonton.

Your absence inevitably brings its own je ne sais quoi that is far more rewarding than some stupid hockey game.

Maybe get in on that tick thread?

The Athletic is handicapping where Marner goes in free agency. Here’s what they said about Winnipeg….

“Unfortunately for the Jets, their location is likely to work against them in this case”

After reading that D-day thread I find it somewhat ironic that a German (Leon “Drai” Draisaitl) just saved Canada’s bacon (which we all know is just ham) with a fluke goal in OT last night.

I also enjoy the Scotch game of golf.

How come you didn’t post a link to that beautiful course in Detroit?

Did they find another corpse on it?

I missed King being around. I don’t think he knew or cared much about hockey but at least he liked to banter about it. Mainly his Nova Scotia boys Sid “The Kid” Crosby, Nathan “Big Mac” MacKinnon and Brad “The Rat” Marchand, who had a monster post season.

I would prefer a Putin-free USA: the very opposite of what Amerikanistan has become today, under Putin's orange poodle.

I guess you bought the Clinton - Steele dossier hook line and sinker. You guys do have a knack for unified thinking that marches you off a cliff.

Maybe just STFU and say thank you to the Americans for the last 80 years. Given German behavior in starting and waging WWII, the Allies would have been justified in letting you wallow in the rubble.

Wow, James. Thank you very much.

Gave me such a nice case of the swells that I could forgive the notion that Justin Trudeau was elected up there.

Ted, some of us called it. The Western half of the country knew what a little poseur prick he was.

He was elected, as was our current idiot, Mark Carney, by the free shit army along with public employees and comfortable, mostly retired boomers.

And if you think you don’t like him, imagine how so many of us up here feel. I would hardly think it fair to characterize Americans as though you all voted for Biden, Clinton and Obama, even though a great many did.

Well, the draft, free agency and expansion is coming up so I can probably keep it going for a couple more weeks. Supposedly Atlanta is going to be given another shot. I personally don’t think the citizens of that state have the intelligence or sophistication to understand the game but if there’s a billionaire down there that wants to give it a whirl, best of luck to him. It’ll probably be the best shot for Canada to get another team when they relocate to Quebec City X years later.

Big news Canada Jim. Jonathan Toews is going sign with the Jets. There was some speculation he would reunite with Kane and DeBrincat in Hockeytown.

Another reason to hate the Leafs. In the world’s most fanatical hockey market, where the Leafs sell out every game with season tickets, for over 50 years now, they constantly veto a team locating in Hamilton, Kitchener or London.

Any of those three locations would do far better than any other city in Canada.

Ontario and Quebec, 25 million people. 3 teams.

Alberta 4.5 million 2 teams.

Manitoba 1.4 million. 1 team.

NS is barely 1 million. There’s not enough money in Halifax or in Quebec City. The Jets stay afloat because the silent backer is in the $50 billion plus club.

Canadian invents new game! HOLF! (HOckey + goLF)

Big guy is former NHL centre man Nick “Big Nick” Tarnasky. Listed at 6’2” 230 in his playing days.

Not a new sport. Hockey is good training for dealing with the people that need to FAFO. Note the good hold Tarnasky had on his shirt. On ice that's to deal with equal and opposite forces because you are on skates. On land, that is to pull the idiot's head into the punch.

Well, James

That time of year again. I’m sure you’re as excited as I am to get the season started. McDavid not signed. All the other upcoming UFA’s not signed, waiting for him to set the ceiling. Wings could use a LW1 on a line with Larks and Rayzer. Kyle Connor would be a good fit.

I hope the organization of the FREEDOM! party is going well.

Season starts tonight.

Canadiens v Leafs tomorrow.

Dastardly Canadiens roll into Dee-troy-it Thursday.

I’d kinda been hoping this thread had died the sad death it deserves.

Might have to mix in a bit of politics to pique his interest. Trump and Carney seemed to be getting along pretty good at the White House.
