I thought his comment, “lost the Purdey to a humble farmer“ telling, and the follow up comment that the same farmer won a second Purdey, amusing as well.
Totally appropriate indeed. I knew a bloke (now departed to the Lord) who used to designate his profession quite humbly - when asked - as "farmer and vintner." - Very plain, very korrekt.
The same man also, in other contexts, used to remark: "this state in the German Federal Republic, which beareth MY name...".
He was of course right in that point, too (it was HRH, Carl Georg, Duke of Württemberg, chef of the former Royal House).
