I bought this stock on the eBay listing last week, it arrived yesterday. I think that the pictures on the listing
are better than any I can take. I realize this is a long shot, but any idea who the stock maker was?

It looks a lot like a Winchester 52 stock to me, but it us very nice. Congrats on a great buy.

I am pretty sure it is for a 52 as well. My Dad had two, they are now with my older brother, I hope one of them will go into that stock. I have an old carding wheel, the buttplate cleaned up nicely but still has a lot of corrosion.

The grain in the buttstock looks fabulous. One thing that stood out to me, the stock appears to be cut for both the original wing safety and the later sliding button that started with the B models. I wonder if the stock was originally made for a B, and then later had an earlier action put in it, as the cut for the wing safety goes into the checkering? On the other hand, there is a factory 52B sporter on GB right now that has cuts for both safeties, or maybe the right side cut was to accommodate a sight? Regardless, it will dress up any action you put in it. One of your fathers actions would make it would be the whipped cream and cherry.

If I saw something that my dad would like, I’d be on the phone or emailing him to tell him about it. When I saw the stock, I was like “Dad would like this”.

This story continues... Fred & I met up at the Kansas City show in July. He discovered the stock didn't fit his father's rifles, so he offered it to me. With the stock in my actual hands, my desire was overwhelming and I gladly paid the asking price without hesitancy. I was determined to see this stock restored to full glory. After speaking with a couple very knowledgeable 52 collectors, I knew what rifle was needed... a late pre-A or unmarked A. The "cut out" by the bolt is actually for a Lyman 48T sight that mounts on the right side... they are super scarce. Called my gunsmith to ask if he had a 48T in his inventory... he did. I obviously bought the sight. Thus began the searching, bidding and losing out on several online 52 auctions. A month later, I finally located a pre-A 52 at a show... the donor rifle's stock was molested but the barreled action was in nice condition, matching the custom stock, plus it had a 48J sight that I thought would help recoup some of my investment, but actually would need for the G&H 52 project in my other thread here. To make it a screaming deal, the same seller had an original 1929 Springfield 1903 factory Sporter too (SRS hit)... both totaled $1,500.! Everything was coming together... I gave the stock & donor 52 to my gunsmith to mount the 48T, swap other pieces and do a little tlc on the stock (steam out dents, clean the checkering, etc.). He also had a nicer Steyr buttplate to replace the existing one. The gun will not be "refinished"... just "conserved" (if that makes sense). This week, my gunsmith informed me that It is ready (along with the G&H 52- 48J sight installation & drilling bolt channel of receiver for a mounting screw since the front barrel band was removed). The G&H received a barreled action transplant that's mentioned in G&H 22 thread here in the forum. I will pick them both up next week... I can't wait.
This was such an amazing project and it all started with an email from Fred back in May... I was so thankful he was willing to part with the stock I recently sent him something to sweeten the deal for him.
I'll post pics of the completed rifles next week... here are a couple pics to clarify.

Good morning, I am sipping coffee and thought I write more. I am happy about a number of things. This thread reminds me of the old days on the forum. I remember Whitey and J.D. Steele and Michael
and how there was so much back and forth, sharing links to interesting guns, being happy when someone found something good. Sending parts back and forth to each other. I imagine a lot of us have
made friends here and continue to do that via e-mail, but it was nice to see this here and be reminded of the old days.

Ben, it was a real pleasure meeting you at the Missouri Valley Show. I enjoyed our conversations. I was so glad to read yesterday of the deal you got on the 52 and the 1929 NRA sporter. I am so glad that you
have the stock and that you will post some pictures of the completed rifle. It is great to know that this stock, the work of a skilled stockmaker, which probably sat for who knows how long and ended up sold on ebay by someone
that was cleaning out an estate is now going to be restored, united with an action and hopefully shot. I look forward to reading more.

There's a couple names I have fond memories of! Both Whitey Hansen and JD Steele were friends that I never met face to face with, but did talk to and correspond with often. I also did some buying, selling and swapping with both! I still have a couple single shot rifles I got in trades with Whitey. I miss both men.

I picked up the completed project yesterday... I'm very pleased. Some of the damage wouldn't "steam" out... still that wood grain amazes me. Project complete... now all is right with the world... Here are some pics...
