I love Mr. Kell’s style and can almost always ID it on sight.
Couple of questions…..
Did Kell sign his work?
Considering two equal high condition, higher tier shotguns, one engraved by Kell and one by an un-named engraver, how much is the premium for the one with Kell’s work?

https://imgur.com/a/IwQcDEdHi Bob, Any views on this one? Made 1894-5 for Tudor Crawshay- hence the Tudor Roses on the fences. Frustratingly the detailed Order book is completely silent as to the engraving or the identify of the engraver.

Harry was born in 1880 or 1881 so, although I think I see some “Kell-like” features in that engraving, I believe he would have been way too young to have engraved that gun or to have supervised the job.
PS I am absolutely no Kell expert nor anything remotely approaching that!

The old Mantra 'buy the gun, not the name' applies tenfold to engraving. What possible value is there in a name beyond the quality of the work?

I disagree, engraving by one of the masters adds value and makes a gun easier to sell. I do agree that engraving is only one aspect and the gun needs to be valued as a whole.

Beautiful gun Ted, and looks very Kell to me. The photo was lifted straight off a site that was discussing Kell"s work. Not my gun, I believe it is a 20 gauge. A few of the Italian engravers have a following that translates into higher prices on guns that carry their names. I think most of those Italian engravers are still working. I'm not aware of Kell's name having the same effect, but, I suppose the right example, to the right buyer, might bid higher. Best, Ted
