Hello Carcano. Can you please advise me of the two potential reasons that you think is the cause of the splits?. I’m trying to learn. Thank you in advance. Bill K.

How was the recoil, consistent? Do you think the powder was proper? If the powder hadn't begun to degrade, it might be a lack of annealing? Ford should put us on the straight & narrow.

Does the case crack the length of the bullet or more?

Hello. I purchased the rounds already made from Reeds Ammunition & Research around 2018 and stored them in my gun safe. I did not make them. I never had a chance to shoot the gun before until yesterday. That was the first time ever that I shot the gun and used these rounds. I did not notice any difference in recoil. The recoil seemed consistent to me. As a matter of fact, I don’t think the recoil was very much. I purchased a chronograph that I wanted to use yesterday, but unfortunately it arrived a day late…today!
It looks like the split in the cases stats at about .25” below from where the bullet sits.

Actually, three potential reasons. Two among the three are certain.

1. Wrong choice of base cartridge for the reforming. It is widely accepted that brass from the .360 Express family is to be chosen, and indeed new 9,3x72R brass is well accessible.

2. Work hardening, and subsequent lack of case annealing after re-forming. Glaringly obvious.

3. Your chamber may be on the wide side too. Might, need not; but I do not think that the 8x58 R S&S was ever normalized. Please measure your fired cases (split and non-splits); but set your digital caliper (or micrometer) to the correct SI (metric) units first.

4. Powder choice and load are very obviously mild, yet accurate enough.

Just to put everyone on the same page, the target hits on the bullseye were from a Hold @ 6 O'clock.

The Hits High on the Target are from a Bullseye Hold.

Thank you for clarifying that for me Raimey. That was at 50 yards with the peep sight from a bench (but not using an actual sled rest). BillK

After a fair amount of forming cases from other available cases, it is my opinion that the considerable re-sizing of the 303 cases caused severe work hardening of the brass that was not relieved by annealing. It takes some experience to decide when to do this. I anneal after fireforming, but sometimes it is also necessary before the reforming is completed. Care is necessary to prevent "burning" the cases. A couple of the cases also seem to show signs that "creases" formed during the process which, if true, is sure to create splits. If any more this lot of ammunition is left, I recommend pulling the bullets, dumping the charge, depriming (pop the primers) and anneal the cases before reloading them. I would have chosen original length 38-55 cases to make them from, others commonly choose 303/30-40, or 9.3x72R. The choice is for the person making the cases to make and taking the responsibility for. My choice results in short cases, others may result in splits, others may result in thick necks, others may result in use of cases needed for other longer cartridges.

Also, it should be noted that the ammo was shot and split sometime after loading and brass is subject to cracking after age hardening, we have all seen antique ammo with split necks.

Indeed. Indeed so.

No.
Not so in this case.
