Sorry Ted, I'm out of the manufacturing game, no interest at my age.
My import business was doing quite well, until Trump came along and turned everything upside down.
I don't complain about VAT in Europe for a very simple reason, I'm not charged VAT on exported goods. Same as in NZ, no VAT paid by me or my clients. I figured a guy who had been an importer in the past might know that.
The weak dollar and investors fleeing our bond market is a very bad sign. Interest rates are not going down anytime soon, nor is inflation. The cost of tariffs will be passed on to the consumer(that is you Ted).
Trump's policies in regards to trade and tariffs are terrible, the cost of living here in America today would make your the price of your widget unaffordable. We will never be a manufacturing powerhouse again, best to leave that to those that can do it on a lower dollar. We have tons of unfilled manufacturing jobs in America today. Why? Because our youth has been told they are too good for that. How about your kid Ted? Is he going to work in factory somewhere on an assembly line? I doubt it.
It is not the suggestion of tariffs that has me in a funk, it is the fact I will be paying tariffs and very successful business model that I had been developing for years has been negatively impacted.
There is about $11 trillion promised at this point. Somebody is going to work for these companies. Perhaps, if times are that tough for you, you can find salvation at one of those outfits.
Seems the market downturn was a bit short in duration:
Trust me Ted, I import a hell of a lot more than junk, like double rifles that retail for more than any Darne you have ever had through your FFL. If you didn't assume so much, you might not come across as such an a$$. How many guns have you sold in the 50K or so range? I'm guessing a damn sight fewer than I have.
You don't seem to get it, I'm quite successful at what I do, I won't be getting out of the gun business because it can be challenging at times....that was you.
Yeah Craig, things have been going well lately, just don't look at stocks, bonds or the value of the dollar. Things are just peachy.
You're kinda sounding left of Jimmy. Did you get a dnc talking point email?
No, but I do engage in business internationally and I see directly how Trump's poor policies have negatively affected my bottom line. Just the facts Craig, these policies have have cost me quite a bit. Tariffs have increased my overhead and reduced the numbers of clients interested in importing, the dollar is lower and that costs me more for everything I buy overseas. The bond market? I didn't think it was possible to screw that up, but here we are.
It's a mess for anyone paying attention.
Got bad news for you, but, if a manufacturer exports things outside of the US, he is interested in a lower dollar, as his goods get easier for the world to buy. To say a boutique importer (that, would be you) importing junk from the UK (no offense, but, that is pretty much what old guns are considered in the UK today) is a concern of this (actually, any) administration is laughable.
That handwriting has been on the wall for quite some time, as well. You should have been paying attention.
Just a fact. Sorry, dude. Find a widget that needs to be produced, and sell it to the world. You’ll do better doing that.
Inflation is down. Interest rates are falling. The stock market will be back, as will the bond market. To top that off, the keys to making the US able to sell manufacturing and production to the world will be in place.
How come you never complained about VATs out of Europe, but, suddenly the suggestion of a tariff has you in a funk?
Best, Ted
You never disappoint, Ted. Congratulations on proving you are King of the Jerks again. You really cannot help yourself, can you?

The guy buying your $50K gun doesn’t give a rip about a tariff. I’d guess most people don’t to be honest. What’s higher, your markup, or, the tariff? Guns aren’t groceries and people don’t buy enough of them in a month to worry about a tariff, that will more than likely fade away after the negotiations are settled. It was you that said the cost of living was too high, I seriously doubt you, or anybody else here has been hurt in the last 100 days, unless they panicked and sold all their investments in the week after the pump and dump in the stock market.
You didn’t do that, did you? Of course you didn’t.

Anyway, good luck.

Sure Ted, but you have told us many times about your own Uggie.
I sell some low dollar stuff, I also sell things that are very high end, higher end than any Darne you have ever sold.
You are quite wrong about the buyers of these type of guns, they did not end up in the position to buy rifles at this price point by making poor financial choices, most of the high end buyers are shrewd negotiators and 10% most certainly matters to them.
You are also wrong about trump's policies not costing me money. I have inventory overseas that was purchased before the tariffs went into effect that I will now need to pay a 10% tariff on. Taking 10% out of my profits hurts, you would know that if you had been successful in running a business.
You never did answer my question about your son, is he going to work on an assembly line in a factory? We both know that won't be the case, your son is too smart for that kind of work. The exact reason that according to Mike Rowe(Dirty jobs, not our BBS member) we have 482K unfilled manufacturing jobs currently. Who is going to take these factory jobs? Not your son.
Tariffs are a terrible idea that hurts small business and the consumer.

Thanks for sharing your story Steve, in fairness we all have them. The fact is, there is not one American who is not affected in some way by any cost increase for any reason. Of course, those with more than others are less affected.
The 'discussion' is that you treat this topic as you have with many others, talking down to people from some position of superiority without meaningful contribution. The fact is, tariffs are an international tactic, not a punitive tactic against legal, productive citizens. Some here have commented about the entire US of A having many screwed up hypocrisies that are forced on us as the norm, yet somehow you found a 'screw up' that's supposed trump them all, until the next talking point comes out.
Each day, we find out about best double times infinite magnitudes of waste, fraud and abuse of working American dollars, which could have rewarded yours and others, hard work. It's still a mess for anyone paying attention, but I didn't think it was possible to screw up the status quo in such a meaningful way. Why don't you want to teach our future generations to appreciate the fruits of hard work, rather than cross dress.
