I've been searching everywhere for some 8x57JR to feed my new to me drilling. Everyone is out of stock. I've found a place in Alabama today that has plenty. I've done business with them once before years ago and had no problems. It's going for $30 a box of 20, Sellier & Bellot. Hope this helps someone.

Looks like they have a lot of desirable brass also.

Please let us know how this goes. I don't think I have ever shot factory 8X57IR.

But Mobile, Alabama is a fine destination. Both Argo44 & I were hatched there @ the Mobile Infirmary, albeit a few years apart???

I've used it on small whitetail does, and it hardly penetrated. The bullets are not so good. Shoot them or pull bullets, and re-load the brass with good bullets. The 7X57R and 7X65R 175gr Cutted-edge bullets were almost frangible. My good friend in Kansas, where we hunted, guides, and he was standing next to me twice when I made shoulder shots at 100-125 yards and got mad at me for "poor shooting"; I had hit her well, however. This first deer took off, not to be found. I was shooting a circa 1956 Sauer LUX 16/16/7X57R with 6X Hensoldt that I have used for years with Norma ammo, something I was now out of. Later we had a similar shot on another doe, and it was a repeat.

He shot the deer with my gun after I had hit her, and it ran off into a creek bottom 1/2 mile away. We caught up with it, and I head shot the poor thing. Paul was aghast to see the wounds he had done. They were shallow and wide. This is no exaggeration, and I am still sad over what happened.

I highly recommend finding some Norma or Nosler bullets and load with them or any other good bullets. The S&B ammo is accurate, and their brass seems fine. Reloader 15 is your friend. wink

What is your opinion on the PPU(0.323") bullet?

When I bought a 8x57JR German made Manton of Calcutta BLNE from Paul Roberts he recommended that I use the S&B rounds for targets and practice and the RWS for Boar (which sadly I never shot with it) and Deer (which I did).

Sounds like he was entirely right.

By a strange quirk if I put RWS Berdan primed in one barrel and newer Boxer primed RWS it would regulate perfectly (L1 was probably me letting the tip if the post go into the black).

I should never have sold that rifle.

Um, I forgot to mention that I only use Woodleighs in the 8X57IR / 0.318".

How much slop do you think I'd have in using the 0.318" Woodleighs in the 8X57IRS. I realize it depends on the bore diameter. But how many thou in friction does one need to be accurate @ 100 metres / paces?

With flat based jacketed bullets and the interia of a 196 grain bullet being started it is likely that the bullet will upset enough to take up all the excess windage.
