I think at the time the Winchester 52's were considered a target rifle, and the vast majority that shot scoped used Target Scopes that would be too close to the shooter's eye with a receiver scope mount. So my thinking is Winchester didn't see enough demand for modern internal adjustment type scopes to offer their receivers D&T for a modern scope.
I believe Remington did the same with the Model 37 Rangemaster rifles? My Model 37 is an old 1938 vintage with a Super Targetspot mounted on the barrel. Not sure if or when Remington may have added holes for a receiver mounted scope, if they ever did.
