I purchased a batch of guns in France using a trusted buyer. We planned on buying over this year and bring them in this fall. But his exporting "gunsmith" said he was quitting handling guns in May. We decided to ship what we have before then. We shipped a Purdey, two Hollands, two Darnes and a Winchester 21 on 3/23, arrived on 3/24, got shipped between airports a couple times, landed at IAD over the weekend and was delivered to the customs broker on 4/7. I just missed having to pay a 20% tariff. I sweated a little on that one! The Purdey is for me, a 1935 cased beauty that has been in France a long time, barely used. I'll enjoy trying to ascertain its history as well as how to shoot it. I'll post photos as soon as I have it in hand.

Thanks for the information.
So, the tariffs also apply to older guns?
I was hoping that they would be limited to new -- or newish -- stuff.

Yes they do, there is nothing good about this policy, poorly thought out and equally poorly executed. Extremely damaging both to the American consumer and to the small business man.

If the tariffs remain, they will affect us all. Trump is trying to make true free trade, and the hope is that all countries, including the U.S., will eventually eliminate tariffs, but it is a negotiation. Even his statement about eliminating income tax by substituting tariffs is a negotiation tactic, and anyone who thinks you can substitute a temporary tax for an enduring tax is not thinking. The best we can hope for is that he will be successful and that free trade will rule. At last report, Israel, Japan, and several European countries have decided to talk. I wish he'd leave the insults out of the negotiations, as it only muddies the water, as people get pissed and can't see straight.

OK. But what does that have to do with this post?

I thought the thrust was about tariffs. As the OP was " My personal experience with tariffs,".

I thought the thrust was about tariffs. As the OP was " My personal experience with tariffs,". I think his question was related to personal experience related to tarrifs and importation of used guns.
