Good morning. Kind of unrelated question. I have never used USPS to ship a gun before. How is their overall service in general. Do you declare what you ship and do you insure it? Do you shipping as registered or signature receipt package? Thank you.

I didn't have to perform any of the shipping (or wrapping duties) on this occasion, but the USPS has become the default option of most of the folks I know that are still doing it. UPS can be a pain at times, depending on the vendor you use. While nothing is cheap to ship anymore, the Post Office is still the least expensive option. Collecting on any insurance claim can be a nightmare, so...try to avoid that. I ship only on Mondays to eliminate having it hanging around over a weekend somewhere (always seems to lead to trouble).

Nobody ever asks what it is you're shipping (you have to make a few declarations while paying for and insuring it all). Doing a very good job of packing is critical these days (see above, right?)

Jimmy: There appears to be a slight curve on this buttstock.

I am much more of a lurker on this site than an active commenter, but that butt plate looks pretty similar to those on AH Fox shotguns. CSMC sells modern reproductions of Fox shotguns. The reproduction butt plates are made of the same material originally used on the old guns. I bought one of Galazans Butt plates from CSMC to repair my butt plate on my A H Fox (Grade A made in 1927). I had to learn to gently heat the material to better fit the slight curve of the butt stock.That can be done in heated water or with a heat gun (be gentle) However, after messing with it and getting the curve correct on the plate, I simply sized it by hand using files and sand paper while I had the Fox butt stock taped off. (Theoretically, it can be done on a belt sander ...but I wasn't risking damage to the stock by sanding too aggressively.). When completed, polish the sanded edges. FYI, I have fit pads to modern shotguns before with a similar technique. It turned out great. Not only does it look original, it fits flush and perfectly. I think the plate was only something like 20 bucks or so plus maybe shipping (it has been probably 10 or more years....keep that in mind). You will have to measure all the butt dimensions plus the hole spacing before ordering.

Years ago I received an email from a young gentleman in Sweden saying he needed a barrel for an L.C. Smith hammer gun that his grandfather bought in New York in 1903 when he came to this country for work. Years later the Nazis came into Sweden and wanted all citizens to surrender any firearms they had. His grandfather wrapped it in a blanket and hid it in a cave. After the war he retrieved it but had rusted barrels. The grandfather still shot it and one day duck hunting the one barrel burst and luckily no one was hurt.
Long story long, he listed some parts he needed plus the barrels, I put out a feeler and one gentleman said he had a set to give him, I had the other parts and wrapped everything and took it to the post office, the woman working there said I had to declare what I was shipping to Sweden and I told her, she said put machine parts not gun parts, if they open the package in Sweden they might confiscate it but they didn't. Like I said this was years ago and the post office was small and the people working there were very nice and I guess it was fairly common to ship guns without them blowing a fuse. Funny I never heard from him again, tried reaching out to see how everything fit and never returned my emails. We didn't want anything for them, just trying to help.

NC Ordinance sold me an "extra-thick" reproduction LC Smith butt-plate for $35 delivered that fits this gun almost perfectly. This particular plate would clearly be too-small on a hammerless gun, but on this 1901 F-Grade it almost needs no fitting. The screw holes lined-up perfectly and the original screws went right back in, no problem. The gun now also fits me much better BTW! I'd of rather not gone down this path for this gun, but this replacement will work just fine.
