We used to heavily wrap the base of each indiviual gun stock before shipping to insure that we had a claim against the postal folks if there were any problems. Any insurance claim here would futal (they would likely be anyway) because the packaging was simply insufficient. Oh well...

"Old and brittle" seems to be the rule when dealing with all the older things in my life these days, including domestic hammerguns. Fixing this minor issue shouldn't be too big of a deal.
