A neat hammergun Lefaucheux platform by Jakob Schaschel in Károlÿváros forsale @ Holts. I seem to remember that a tube maker Schaschel in the Austro-Hungarian Empire rolled his own tubes? I will dig.

>>Provenance: Jakob Schaschel was the eldest of six sons of Janez Schaschl, a gunsmith from Kapla ob Dravi, and Barbara Schaschel, née Schwarz. He learned gunsmithing from his father, who had a gunsmith's workshop in Ljubljana, and furthered his studies with various masters in Austria. Between 1852–54, he accompanied the missionary Ignatius Knoblehar through Africa and described this journey and his stay in Africa in an exceptionally beautifully handwritten book, complete with 34 watercolors, under the title Bilder aus dem Oriente. After his return, he lived in Novo mesto between 1855–57, where he opened a gunsmith's workshop and taught drawing as an optional subject twice a week at the Novo mesto gymnasium. He was the first drawing teacher at this school. From this time, he is also known for copying epitaphs carved in the corridors of the Novo mesto Franciscan monastery. In 1857 he moved to Karlovac, where he also opened a gunsmith's workshop, and he also devoted himself to painting. He was self-taught in painting. He painted altarpieces of saints and historical motifs, portraits, still lifes and landscapes, especially views of Karlovac. He was also an engraver and the owner of a fine numismatic collection

As a gunsmith who made, decorated and engraved guns, he was famous throughout Austria-Hungary and received 500 gold coins and a special award for a gun presented to Emperor Franz Joseph. He also received several awards and commendations at exhibitions of craft products for his other crafts and paintings. His diary Bilder aus dem Oriente, some gunsmith products and paintings are kept in the city museum in Karlovac, and his paintings are in private and church collections in addition to Croatia, in Bela Krajina and Dolenjska.<<

!st, I remembered Franz Umfahrer & Pferdestärke....

>>Franz Umfahrer, weapons and barrel maker of Klagenfurt, Kärnthon may have been a little larger regarding craftsmen with around 160 craftsmen but his hydropower was at 14 Pfdkr. His operation had 4 barrel forges( Laufschweissfeuer), 2 tube hammers, 4 barrel boring machines and 3 lathes. He founded his quaint business in 1853 and twenty years later it had really increased as he claims in 1872/1873 to have supplied around 7000 components to Austria, Egypt, Germany, Italy, Modlan Walchei(?) and Russia in that year or in total by that year which I'm more apt to believe(He advertises as supplying makers in the whole of Austria(Oesterreich), in Deutschland, Italien Russland, Egypten, in der Trkei, Moldau und Walachei, by employing some 160+ craftsmen). He may have finished the barrels<<

I can't speak for the Schaschel / Schaschl spelling just yet.

So info from another thread:

>>The guilds kept a heavy thumb on the pyramid of craftsmen in that there were few master mechanics & many, many more apprentices, journeymen & skilled mechanics. Having a bias that the name atop the tubes of a sporting weapon is not the actual maker is generally a good stance, but it is possible with bespoken sporting weapons makers like the smaller ones in Ferlach that they played some part in the overall construction of the sporting weapons bearing their name. The larger concerns would source components and efforts from other gunmaking centers like Liege & Suhl/Zella Sankt Blasii - Mehlis in order to fill orders. I am not certain if Josef Winkler was a member of the Consortium or not but I am confident that he at a minimum sourced components and possibly some effort from the Consortium. A guess was that he had say 3 mechanics and possibly double that number of apprentices & journeyman and rolled out quality examples. Ferlach craftsmen are some of the best tube tuners around & their proximity to the local forest/shooting grounds provides an excellent opportunity to equip upper rung hunters with their whims.

Digging deeper in the sand pile of Ferlach gunmaking as the sand piles in on you, it appears highly probable that 2 gunmaking brothers Schaschl departed Liege to establish a dynasty of gunmaking in Ferlach in the late 1500s. Their families may have originated in Maastricht, Holland or mechanics from Maastricht, Holland were recruited. Premier Ferlach tube maker John Schaschl gives origins as far back as circa 1650 and has to be one of the descendants of the Brothers Schaschl, who would have provided a workshop for subsequent Ferlach mechanics to study and pass thru. Seems there is quite a story here also.<<

Karolyvaros is the old Hungarian name for present day Karlovac in Croatia not too far from Zagreb. The Historical Museum in Zagreb owns a few Jakob Schaschl/Šašel guns including some Winchester Model 1866 ex Turkish Muskets engraved by this talented artist. These lever actions were captured in Bosnia during the 1878 occupation by the Austro-Hungarian army.

Jani
