I traveled east through the burn scarred badlands of San Bernardino county arriving at the Bass Pro Shop in beautiful Rancho Cucamonga. I picked up 10 cases of 20 gauge target AA's and Herters to shoot through a new to me Model 21 Trap/Skeet.
I knew it was coming but this was my first experience with the States new Excise tax on anything firearms related. I will sleep better knowing that my combined sales and excise tax, 18 3/4% (almost $200), will somehow save lives. What a crock!

Been that way for a long, long time. I suppose California has some extra new taxes, but at the federal level, you have been paying excise taxes all of your life. Federal Aid In Wildlife Restoration Act Commonly known as Pittman-Robertson after its sponsors, this 75-year-old legislation established an excise tax on firearms and ammunition. Monies go into the Interior Department and are distributed to states, which match the funds with 25 percent of monies from hunting license sales. On average, North Carolina receives about $13 million per year for wildlife research, management, and habitat protection. Species such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and wood ducks are shining examples of restoration supported by the legislation. This “tax legislation on sportsmen,” which actually was adopted during the Great Depression, is a shining beacon in the history of wildlife legislation and proves that dedicated revenue collections can indeed be accomplished.

I knew it was coming but… So did we, Bob, and we’ve begun paying our new annual $39,000,000 fine for being legal hunters and shooters. (It goes for “mental health services”, “victims of domestic violence”, etc. not wildlife related causes). I know it’s said that California Leads the Way but with our Make Colorado California campaign here, you’d better look out. 😉

Brent, I don't think the new 11% California tax goes toward conservation like the federal Pittman-Robertson funds. It is just meant to punish gun owners.

a lot of those excise taxes got to wildlife conservation Not in this case. The 11% CA excise tax is purely to punish hunters and shooters, and is supposed to go toward offsetting the effects of "gun violence," which has absolutely nothing to do with us. The fed excise taxes are already buried in the price of the ammo, so we get to pay outrageous sales and state excise taxes calculated on top of the fed excise taxes. In my town, the current sales tax rate is 10.5%, so with the new excise tax it's 21.5% on the purchase price of the ammo. I have not purchased any ammo in CA since this went into effect, and I plan to never buy ammo in CA. They want my money? Screw the bastards. I'll take my business out of state.

Brent’s too narrow minded to think the new tax will be used for anything else besides conservation. He couldn’t imagine that his gods would use it to hurt gun owners . The recent actions of California Commiecrats suggests that is indeed the sole purpose for the tax.

My understanding is, as a California resident, if you buy ammo out of state and bring it back across the California border it is a felony.
