Wow, Kutter, thanks for sharing that. I’ve never seen handguards incorporated so elegantly into a sporting rifle.

That G&H that RIA listed was Bennisons rifle That RIA bought from another auction and resold. The new photos are of two more full stocked sporters, the one just a rough remodel of the issue stock while the other one is the only known full stock that the S-man created. He used the issue handguard and checkered the little pattern on it.

Speaking of S-Man, looking at dates on 1903 barrels do you have a rough time frame when he was active?

Of the 13 that I have listed which includes the 7 that Michael had listed, only 3 have serial numbers over 900,000. Two are 1920 NM rifles and one is a 1923 NM rifle. Over half have long slide 48s. I also have an NRA sporter that was sold by Govt in 1928 that has the stock checkered by the S-man. So, he at least was still doing checkering in 1928 but more than half were probably done before 1920. My first one is a real low number with an "05 barrel date but it has a std Lyman 48 so it had to be done after 1920. I've got two low #ed Springfields with RIA 3-18 dated barrels so he must have had a source of new RIA barrels. I would put his approximate time from 1915 to 1930.

The story I remember about the G&H engraved rifle that RIA sold belonged to Mark Benenson (sorry I spelled his name wrong above). He bought it from G&H after the person who had it made didn't take it, it had the Moose floor plate and Mark thought it needed the patriotic flag one so had G&H make that. He also had the bayonet engraved to match the rifle. Michael had told me this story as he and Mark were great friends.

Dan's gun with the added pistol grip may have looked as good or better if the straight grip were left in place. Great guns. I want to build one.
