I think the Lang patent for a sideplate retainer came in several different iterations. One used a key inserted after opening the trap door. This gun, ca. 1911 had a different idea. If one could open the trap door without damaging the sideplate, the sideplate actually jumps into one's hand.

That coil spring looks pretty stout!

Yes, the coil spring seems stout. My thumb nail is not strong enough to open the door, so I ground the tip of a piece of deer antler to assist. I found that the gun locks need to be in the fired position when replacing them. Daryl

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this gun a sidelock, not a sideplate?

My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.

Rob, of course it is a sidelock. The locks are attached to the sideplate. It is not uncommon for a gun to have "false" sidelock sideplates, with a boxlock or even a triggerplate action. I think the Lefever in one of its iterations had sideplates with the lock on the interior of the gun. A friend has a John Dickson trigger plate gun with sideplates, making it appear to be a sidelock.

That's what I thought, I was confused by the title "side plate removal". But I guess the term side plate can refer to the plates on a side lock or the decorative plates on a box lock...

thanks,

Rob
