This modelo can't be evaluated from pics it must be handled. It takes keen eye and good pair of hands to separate "the wheat from the chaff".

If there are no markings on the trigger plate, then it is a Standard Grade. Even Standard Grades had very wood at that point in time.
Again: What is the gauge, barrel length, chokes and barrel markings? The Cody Museum will tell for sure how it left the factory. Spend the money and get the letter.

He is trying to buy this gun, so isn't getting Cody letter a bit on longish side? Basically he will be getting letter for a gun that somebody else has already bought. It's a good thing that anything in pretty good shape is worth 5k. I have seen some in clunker shape go for >3k.

48: You have research to do. There is an entire book written on this model gun. There is also a very good website hosted by a member of this board, though his interest has waned a bit in recent years. http://members.tripod.com/bluepike/index.htmI got interested in the Model 21 a few years a ago, did my research, talked to owners, handled several guns, read the book, and eventually found an excellent condition skeet gun that filled the void nicely. The whole project was rewarding, and I shoot the gun regularly. The chase is half the fun. It's your money (5 large!), so you owe it to yourself to get as smart as possible. This first 21 you are considering may be the right one for you, but odds are that it's not. There are enough of them out there that you can find the right one if you devote some time to the project. Good luck, and happy hunting.

The 21's are addicting as I discovered. I bought a nice Skeet gun several years ago and thought it was the only one that I ever needed and wanted until I found a beautiful 30 inch standard with beautiful wood etc. That filled in everything, until I found my latest 16 ga with 28 in bbls, straight grip and double triggers. Now , I feel complete and hope that I won't find another.

Please tell me about the position of adjustable screw, its location and what to look for.How can I tell about original cold blue? This is a 28" bbl 12GA. Should chambers be 2 3/4 or 2 1/2"?

It has 2 3/4" chambers. Don't worry to much about the bluing. If all the metal edges and markings are sharp then it may not have been reblued or done so by someone who knew what they were doing.(if it's cold blue, then it's not original) If the gun locks up tight, don't mess with the adjustment screw. It is located in the center of the locking slot at the rear of the breech, below the ejectors. It controls how deep the locking lug goes into the slot. The locking lug needs to go in just deep enough to hold the barrels tight and the opening lever not be sticky. If the gun is hard to open, the screw needs to be backed out just a bit. If the barrels are not tight, turn it in a bit.

Getting back to what Don asked earlier- is there anything engraved/stamped under the receiver between the trigger guard and the forend like a name that says: TRAP, SKEET, DUCK, etc.? Also is there any checkering on the sides of the buttstock directly behind the receiver above the grip? Or is there only checkering where you grip the buttstock?
