In 1875 “Bertie” Prince Albert Edward, later Edward VII, made a tour of India.

He equipped himself with a large quantity of best quality guns and rifles, for presentation to Maharajahs and Princes and to show off the best of British workmanship.

If the Prince of Wales emblem doesn't indicate his personal ownership your lovely gun was probably one of the presentation pieces.

Hi Parabola, I wish it were the case that this double was one of the prince's presentation pieces. My understanding is that following Dougall's receipt in 1872 of a royal warrant from the prince, that Dougall's guns bore the 3 ostrich feather symbol of the Prince of Wales. But this applied to all Dougall's higher grade work and does not show an actual connection with Edward. I am only repeating what I've read, not confirming its accuracy.

A bit more info on the Prince's trip to India in 1875: http://www.hunting-heritage.com/blo...manufacturer-to-hrh-the-prince-of-wales/

I need to read up more on the original owner of another double of mine, an Army Navy CSL 500BPE made by Webley & Scott in 1889 (forgive me if this was just Webley or just Scott at the time...their chronology is a bit confusing to me). Anyway, that screw grip actioned double rifle was purchased by Col. Malleson in 1889 from Army & Navy. But in 1875, he was in the service of Maharaja of Mysore. I'm curious if the princes tour took him there.

FWIW, Malleson wrote a number of books on India and the mutinies. The University of Glasgow was kind enough to say who bought the gun, and I haven't been able to find more than just this one Col. Malleson in the British Army and EIC rolls. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Bruce_Malleson

That rifle has only been with me a month or so, and needs its own thread, and a trip to the range. It's similar to the ones shared by canvasback and CaptCurl in this thread: https://www.doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=269467&page=1

CJF,
Stellar purchase! I feel the lockfast actions tend to be under appreciated, there are a few available local to me that have been listed for quite some time. What auction house was this? If you don't mind my asking

This was out of Central Treasures Auctions in Texas. Glad you like it. I’m a sucker for high original condition and original case for anything this old.

In the third picture down of the original post A L can be seen stamped . My Richard Jeffery pinfire shown in later pictures has J Wilkes stamped in that position. It is assumed J Wilkes was the actioner. What do you think A L represents in the gun of the first posting ?

Apologies Daryl, I have no answer to your question. Does your Richard Jeffery also have the "X" stamped towards the knuckle?

CJF, the Richard Jeffery pinfire has no X. I just looked at the Dougall marked two barrel set and it has J G stamped in that place with no X. Apparently there were lots of craftsmen who could produce almost any designs. I don't know who J G might have been.

Apparently, the design can be spelled either Lockfast, or Lock-Fast as on the Richard Jeffery gun above.
