Sometimes you get lucky at auctions. This Dougall was auctioned this summer. Great pictures with the listing. Almost 80 of them. Clear, comprehensive. And yet there was only one other bidder. To get a cased, best quality, interesting gun, with accessories, delivered to your door for under $1600 is a treat, especially when the supporting photos give you a very good idea of what you're getting. (Many of my best buys are on guns that sell low because the auction house took crappy dark pictures or gave inaccurate descriptions.)

Accessories included a turn screw, wrench for the firing pins, powder and shot scoops and a capper/decapper. Plus a tiny wooden container with spare firing pins and the funky camping disk found in Dougalls. And 25 nickeled cases and a tin of primers with a patent date going back to 1868. Neat!

The auction listing: We are pleased to offer this rare and fine James Dalziel Dougall (J.D. Dougall) cased black powder double barrel shotgun. Established in 1760, J.D. Dougall is a coveted gun maker to both the Prince of Wales and The Duke of Edinburgh, Scotland. These details are noted on the original paper tags affixed to the interior red velvet case lid. This beautiful circa approximately 1875 shotgun (Serial Number: 3213) is held within the original leather serial numbered matched case and comes with original tools, brass re-loader, nickel brass ammo cases and accessories. Beautiful foliate engraved case hardened receiver with noted J.D. Dougall designed Lockfast action lever. Receiver is marked "J.D. Dougall" with "Patent Lockfast" marked beneath. The top of the receiver between the dual hammers is marked with The Prince of Wales's feathers which are the heraldic badge of the Prince of Wales, the heir to the British throne. The badge consists of three ostrich feathers encircled by a coronet ribbon. Below the coronet bears the German motto Ich dien ("I serve"). Includes double triggers, browned patina aged damascus sighted barrels, English walnut finely engraved stock / forearm and etched metal butt plate. All matching serial numbers with serial number 3213 nicely marked in numerous places to include the receiver, barrel, forearm and receiver stock tang. Leather case lid is detached.
This shotgun was produced prior to 1898 and classified as an "Antique". As such, NO FFL or Paperwork required. May be mailed directly to your home address

Looks like the side lever in the previous photo, but why the hole? Interesting looking hammers and even more interesting breech face and potential provenance.

Very nice Dougall lockfast. The pictures show some case color and cased. Great buy!

Brent is correct...that black hole goes clear through the side lever that unbolts the gun. It appears black because of the background beneath it. Here is a different angle showing the lever and this lightening hole.

The triggers are gold washed. The action flats say this is a 'highest' grade gun. The damascus barrels are stamped 'best'.

Ah! I had not noticed the side lever at the very bottom of the other picture. I immediately thought that was what it was but having not seen the detail of the previous picture I thought I would ask. Thanks for pointing that out.
