[Hey all, just one today. The hens held point great today, but... .the roosters were spooky today. Didn't hold point or flushed wild. Should have had another, but just flat out missed! Addie did well as always, very happy with her! Used my 12b Cogswell and Harrison Konor today Stay well my friends Greg url=https://postimg.cc/6TBDzZnP] ![[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]](https://i.postimg.cc/dQCwsm1J/20241123-150536.jpg) [/url]

![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](http://i.imgur.com/UH5tDhAh.png) Headed up Friday evening ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](http://i.imgur.com/3699ycFh.png) 1st day ![[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]](http://i.imgur.com/kooAuJTh.png) Headed home Back at home after a successful elk hunt and overall Fall season. Hard to believe how warm it was up in Minnesota in September and how cold it was here on Saturday last (compare these shots to my post here on August 28th). I was just the helper on this hunt and it was quite short, my buddy killed this small cow within just a few minutes of daylight on the opener (I barely had time to process my deer and then go do this). Just one trip left for me this year (South Dakota, next week) and then my outside world will shrink back to largely my home and hearth. Somehow it always ends with me wanting more? I might go visit an old Pennsylvania college buddy in Tampa in February (and take him some ruffed grouse and venison for us to grill, as his hunting days may be over) but...darn-it, Fall goes by just too quickly. I really try to make each one count now.

Been a few seasons since iron sights on a rifle were a thing for me. I only know one individual who shoots one of the Swiss straight pull rifles, he is not a hunter, just trudges out to the range 4-5 times a year to shoot. Not a common rifle, here. When I was a boy, we knew several old guys that used .303 British military rifles to hunt deer, I’m sure they were “sporterized” to some extent, but, I was a kid, and couldn’t tell you what was done to them. Dad said after the war, sporting goods stores had old military rifles in a 55 gallon drum for $5-$10 each. During the 50s, my Dad would come home on leave to deer hunt with his brother-in-law, and I think he borrowed a rifle from him. He bought a Remington 742 in the early 1960s, the model with the basket weave checkering, in 30-06. He was a Garand guy, semi auto and 06 always appealed to him.
I still have his rifles. I never took a shine to deer hunting, I get it, I just don’t do it. There was always a Setter in my world, whimpering at the door to come with me.
Thanks for the video.
Best, Ted

Ted:
The difference between bird hunting and deer hunting is surprisingly vast and I approach each with a very different mind set.
Considering that both are doing essentially the same thing (highly evolved food gathering) I can't fully explain why. Sitting here this AM processing my share of a small cow elk should be a clue I suppose, but there you have it. I'd have to say that I take the large game hunting more seriously somehow, as it has supplied a big chunk of my primary protein needs for so-long now.
Perhaps I see bird hunting as more "fun" and bigger game as more "serious"? No matter, elk steaks at grouse camp next year.
