Been a few seasons since iron sights on a rifle were a thing for me. I only know one individual who shoots one of the Swiss straight pull rifles, he is not a hunter, just trudges out to the range 4-5 times a year to shoot. Not a common rifle, here. When I was a boy, we knew several old guys that used .303 British military rifles to hunt deer, I’m sure they were “sporterized” to some extent, but, I was a kid, and couldn’t tell you what was done to them. Dad said after the war, sporting goods stores had old military rifles in a 55 gallon drum for $5-$10 each. During the 50s, my Dad would come home on leave to deer hunt with his brother-in-law, and I think he borrowed a rifle from him. He bought a Remington 742 in the early 1960s, the model with the basket weave checkering, in 30-06. He was a Garand guy, semi auto and 06 always appealed to him.

I still have his rifles. I never took a shine to deer hunting, I get it, I just don’t do it. There was always a Setter in my world, whimpering at the door to come with me.

Thanks for the video.

Best,
Ted
