Enjoy watching him learn, I always do. Great looking pup and he appears to be off to a good start.

The guns were put away, and I believe there were a couple of adult drinks not in the image area, but, the dog was still guarding her grouse:

Photo credit to Lloyd-one of the drinks was his.

Not my dog. But my second day of my first time. Got more birds than I payed for. Considered it a successful time.

There are many things to enjoy in a hunt. My son and grandaughter , age 10, flew 48 hours from Kuwait to join us. Other friends came from New York, Indiana, and Idaho. One friend brought his 8 year old daughter, too. Neither of the girls shot, but that didn't keep them from finding special experiences.

My granddaughter is being given a knife for the hunt. She had never had one before. She jumped right in cleaning the birds, though, which surprised me a bit.

There are lots of things to discover on a hunt, even if you do not shoot.

Two friends had fine dogs. Shorthairs and English Setters. I don't want to leave them out. It was my first year in 40 years that I didn't have a dog along.

The shooters all used doubles. Baker, Parker, Hollis Bently and Playfair, a Westley Richards droplock, and a Hussey as I recall.

It feels good to enjoy the end of the hunt.

Daryl,
I can feel your pride in the photos of the girls, grandfathers (and great grandfathers) rather watch the kids do it than do it themselves. This is what will make our sport continue.

Mike, you are so right. I remember when I was only a year or two older than my granddaughter and I got my first game with a 410. On the same day , I got a jackrabbit and a red fox. I don’t think either is 410 game, but it happened with my Stevens 410 bolt action. Later in the season I got my first pheasant . It fell into Little Tarkio Creek in SW Iowa. My uncle, who was with me teased that the bird really drowned. It took the bloom off a bit, but later he admitted he was just teasing. Hugs to him, long gone.

What firearm did you use to kill the elk?

Had a "meat shoot" at my local trap club yesterday, and managed to win three out of five rounds using Husqvarna hammer doubles. I was the only sxs shooter out of rougly a hundred people. It felt great to do well with these old doubles, and to literally bring home the bacon! Guns shown are a Husky 103BS 16 I just picked up a couple days ago, and a Husky 48 12ga that I converted to straight grip.
