Western MN is right on the edge of the migration.

A drive up highway 72 will demonstrate how much of the area is balsam fir/tamarack swamp, devoid of earthworms, and other food. The further west you go, the fewer woodcock there are.

I recall seeing two in the time I have passed there. I started hunting there in the late 1980s.
