now, if you add a pint sized beagle named maggie to the mix, you have replicated my dynamic duo...

boy, what fun we had, roaming the uplands of ny and pa in pursuit of old ruff, back in the 90's, when there were still birds in those places...

All good things come to an end.

I believe I've walked my last trail for up here this year. I've got a few things to do and other loose ends but...home sounds good to me right now. It's been fun.

How did you do in the end? I would be interested in your juvenile to adult ratio, if you kept count.

Any woodcock? I can imagine they are still up there.

There aren’t many woodcock in that part of the world:

https://explorer.audubon.org/explor...p;layersPanel=expand&legend=collapse

Western MN is right on the edge of the migration.

A drive up highway 72 will demonstrate how much of the area is balsam fir/tamarack swamp, devoid of earthworms, and other food. The further west you go, the fewer woodcock there are.

I recall seeing two in the time I have passed there. I started hunting there in the late 1980s.

Best,
Ted

Thank you Karl.

Brent: I actually might have a way to determine the adult/juvenile ratio. Let me see if that will work. Ted is right about the Woodcock, I only see a few and not even every year.

Back at home and slowly adjusting to modern life (after two months of mostly lonely roads I may never fully adjust to crappy traffic again). It snowed hard here last night and I had to dig out early this AM to drop the dog at the groomers. The same icy driveway that wrecked my ankle last December is full of snow and ice yet again. Pick up your cross and carry it uphill, right?

I did tell a little fib earlier in that I hunted one last day before my departure. I had to go to town to get a few things (pink antifreeze for the sinks and roilets) and I managed a detour down through the forrest on the way. I took my converted pinfire Lang for a walk (and had a good one). The photos are still on my phone but... my ancient laptop is seemingly making the transfer of them difficult somehow (an update must have occured of some type?). Hope to have that working shortly.

The lighting was very unusual, slanting hard even in mid-day. A nice way to end it.
