I spent the last several days in northeast Minnesota. Where is also hot as af... Really out of character for this time of year, but at least there was a good strong breeze.. I was not growl hunting however. I was building new pasture and selling fence posts. Headed down to south central Wisconsin now for a match, and it is still hot. I thought it was supposed to cool off this week but no such luck.

The heat and humidity have certainly been a trial here so-far. I have somewhat compensated for that with a new piece of kit...

By using this game carrier clipped to a belt loop, I don't need my vest on the shorter walks, I just wear a orange t-shirt and stuff a few shells in my pants pockets. I even sent this pix to the makers down in Duluth (Frost River) and told them how good it's working for me.

Edit to add: saw a rather large bear yesterday in my travels. One forgets just how big and "black" those things really are. Thankfully, he was as startled by our meeting as I was.

No birds yesterday, but I picked about a pound and a half of Lobster mushrooms (on a trail I'd walked earlier in the week) and cleaned and sautéed them in butter back at the house. I then froze them in ziplocks for later use (lobsters are hard to miss and do not have any "look-alikes" that aren't edible [or worse]). I've been threatening to do this for years, but last winter I used all that time needed to heal-up (from my wrecked ankle) to educate myself a little further on the subject. Morels, chanterelles, and now lobsters are on my list. Boletes to follow? The crops on the birds I kill up here are often full of mushrooms...

Not hard to see how they got their name?

Saw two road birds in my travels, but nothing on the trails I walked. It's finally cooling down a bit here. Still waiting on a freeze.

Less bugs, more birds and a freeze is possible this coming Thursday night.

Lloyd,
A freeze would mean that Woodcock would be moving as well!
