Very few. Nowhere near the numbers of last year.

Pretty, even if not completely palatable.

The far-better option.

Well, I will be happy to take those sprucies off your hands. They are completely edible in my opinion. Better than sharptails, for instance.

They're not awful, just not as good as the Ruffies. The population of Sprucies here is in decline (according to the local experts anyway) so I/we try to leave them alone. This year,it seems that everyone who came up had to shoot at least one (including me) so I've got several now to deal with.

About two weeks late, but Fall is here now. Cold at night and cool during the day (finally!).

Getting pretty bare here in spots...

but the birds keep coming. In only ones and twos this year, but over time it's been enough.

I've certainly had my opportunities though. Walking out yesterday I had 5 birds flush when I was almost back at the truck. I was tired and sore (big evening the night before) and they clearly caught me flat-footed. Every time I'd line up on one, another would launch, which pulled my eyes off-target. I reloaded and stepped into the cover, hoping for one last launch and I got one, but this bird was an acrobat that kept trees between me and him until he (she?) was long out of range. The good news here is that I know there's still a few birds left on that trail.

It's pretty perfect here right now. But...they're calling for snow next week. Fall is ephemeral after all.

Highest fall density of ruffed in the Interlake of MB seems to occur in young growth aspen/spruce. On higher ground, burned semiopen jackpine forest turns into an almost impenetrable jungle of doghair jackpine with charred logs criscrossed underneath. Too much of a dirty mess to salvage log the big trees left standing. Spruce grouse populations increase dramatically.

you are in heaven...

if you happen to come across a medium sized, liver and mostly white male English setter...

that could be my friend princie...

he is no doubt hunting up there for eternity...

looking forward to joining him...

when the timing is right...
