The socks (mostly early Orvis, variable color and striped) were hand me downs from my father’s gunsafe.

I do not known about their rust protection, know my father and I used them principally used them for protection in the gunsafe from bumps and bruises from moving guns in and out of the safe and to color code what gun is which when digging stuff out.

I have opted to extended hot water wash without detergent (to not remove silicone or vci) if it makes a difference, and damp dry (no heat), then hang dry for an extended and then do a six month test on a test gun (Winchester M37 single shot I care less about) for a six month test as I do not have an immediate requirement to use.

My gut is that properly cleaning and oiling is more important to protect from rust than the sleeve treated with VCI treatment. I also have long uses a golden rod.
