Good to hear you are ok Stanton. Who would have thought that Helene would retain that much power that far inland. I guess its forward speed is what kept it from degrading in the swamps of the Big Bend. Hope your crops and property didn't suffer too badly. Gene

Gasoline, ice, groceries, etc. are becoming available here. We're good. The only crop we have to be concerned about is peanuts. They're going to need to be dug and combined soon.
May God bless America and those who defend her.

The destruction in western NC and eastern TN is really unimaginable. The news videos and pictures of the destruction don't show the full scope of the destruction.....mainly because much of what was destroyed no longer exists. Asheville, NC, has a fairly large homeless population, and one of the larger tent encampments they call home no longer exists.

The mountainous terrain and high number of creeks and rivers in the NC/SC mountains has led to dozens (if not more) of communities with cut off from all ground access. Bridges and hundreds of miles of road are just gone. The National Guards from NC, SC and numerous other states have been airlifting supplies and transporting the displaced out of these communities. Along with the National Guards, dozens of private operators of helicopters have descended on our states and are delivering supplies and rescuing people, albeit in much smaller numbers than the Chinooks can carry. Just when you were about to give up on the thoughtfulness of strangers.
A positive bit of news: on Friday SC had 1.3 million without power while NC was around 1 million. Today’s count just under 900,000 are without power in SC and under 500,000 in NC. God bless the line workers - and they’re here from all over the US and even our neighbors in Canada.
Thanks all for your concern and kind thoughts for all of those affected by this disaster.

Growing up in Florida we were always taught that it was water not wind that was the killer. Florida is mostly sand or limestone and the highest point in the state is 345' so the water just disappears. But Agnes in 1972 showed what a hurricane dumping 30" of rain onto the mountains can do.
Brother lives just SW of Asheville. He's on a mountain and is isolated but can text, no cell phone, internet. Uncle, former air-wing commander on the Enterprise, is on a mountain in Asheville; He is 95 and is ok...there is a way down the mountain. Bridges, culverts, dams, roads, gone. It rivals Katrina (and I have a brother in New Orleans, Vietnam Vet, who still suffers PTSD from that new lake added to the N.American map).
And I'll add the outpouring of support from across the country, states, churches, towns in this type of situation is what makes America special.

Stan, when I saw Helene barreling towards Georgia I thought heaven help the production farm crop. I hope you can get the peanuts out of the ground. I just got off the phone with a friend in the NC mountain town of Saluda. No electricity or water. They get pipe line water from Hendersonville and the supply has been cut with no word when it will be turned on. Allan has about 6 days of propane left to power his big Generator and tonight he hosts neighbors in a cookout as they have no refrigeration as he does. One river where we fish nearby flash flooded wiping out all houses on its banks and the body count is uncertain as it is unknown whether they evacuated or not. The houses are gone. Gil
