In my case, I just want to read without being bothered.
Because I use five different devices for reading, and at any time the system updates on one will change its online identity, and prevent me from logging in.
whatever the settings are on one device may not be the same as what they are on another.
Out there doing it best I can.

How would you be bothered, CZ? Do you think someone would see you were online and send you a private message you wouldn't want to answer right then? I can't think of any other reason, right off. You wouldn't be obligated to answer a p.m. immediately anyway. I think everyone realizes that we might not notice we have a new p.m. immediately.
Again, not arguing, just trying to make sense of it.

According to what I see reposted by others here on this thread there are some who seem to be saying they are hiding their online status for the sake of privacy? It just goes over my head that someone can want privacy and be posting on a thread here at the same time. I do NOT want to argue about this, and I'm not being "nosey". I don't want to convince anybody that what they're doing is wrong, or right. I just want to understand. I'm thinking possibly I'm missing out on some opportunities here that I am not aware of.
I would be totally happy if I get some reasonable explanations, from anyone who can understand the reasons......... not just the ones who hide their online status. I'm not picking on anybody in particular. I haven't, and won't, mention any names. But, the old cliche' "Hit dog hollers" does come to mind. Be very careful Stan, lest Jimmy W thinks that you've been peeking at my posts after you have loudly proclaimed that you have me on ignore. But that aside, why are you so intensely curious, and why do you even know who has elected to stay private with respect to their attendance? You seem to be quite a snoop. Are you stalking someone? Maybe you shpuld come clean with off-smelling aspirations, eh? And of course, you, Ted, give a [censored - come on man!]. You are always first to have Stan's back and look for an opportunity to take another dig at somebody for whatever reason that makes you feel better about yourself. You are quite the acolyte. Keep trolling, Stanly. Eventually, you will hook a whopper.

Seems nobody really cares to get deep into why they choose to hide their online status. CZ ventured, actually, but refuses to explain. I have had one private message from a stand-up guy who told me his reason, and I respect it. BTW, I hadn't even noticed he was one of those who hid his online status. Regardless what my detractors claim, I have no ulterior motives with my query. Just trying to understand the reasons. But, I must admit, it's fun that it bothers them so much.
