So, I'm just looking for help understanding something about the way this forum is set up. On the left of the screen there is a box entitled "Who's Online Now", with names of members, and a number of guests, underneath. If you click on your own user name at the top right of this page you will get a dropdown box with numerous choices. The top one is "Preferences". When you click on it you can choose many options, one of which is whether or not to hide your online status.

I have noticed for years that some user/members choose to do this. You can tell they do because you can be in the middle off a discussion with them, each person quickly answering the other, and that person's name will not show up in the "Who's Online Now" box. I have even asked a couple of these users why they choose to do that but have never been given an answer. So, why would someone do that? What is to be gained by hiding your online status, if you're posting anyway?

It's just always puzzled me and I'm hoping others brighter than me here can enlighten me.

Thx, SRH

People who took this song to heart?

I was told, over and over, to never post with my real name, here, and elsewhere. I’d get “hacked”.

Hasn’t happened.

Best,
Ted

Some people like their privacy. What is wrong with that?

You are rather nosey Stan.

A guy on SOCIAL MEDIA proclaims something about privacy. 2 minutes with an internet connection and anyone can know who you are, where you live, how much you make, what you do, political affiliation and you prattle about privacy?

You can’t make this stuff up….

Best,
Ted

Well you and Stan sure seem to need to prattle on about it. I am game.

Maybe if you read a little closer, you could hang with the conversation.

I had a former worthless son-in-law who was fired from a very overpriced very underqualified job because he took a sick day and then reported in long conversations on social media that he was kicked back on the couch with a brewskie, a sancwich and a ball game. Even commented on how much better it was than work. A suspicious, had-enough-of-it fellow employee forwarded the link to the owner of the tech startup. Add stupid to the qualities. Sometimes smart people know when to show restraint. I believe the boss likely questioned the rat about why they saw the post.

According to what I see reposted by others here on this thread there are some who seem to be saying they are hiding their online status for the sake of privacy? It just goes over my head that someone can want privacy and be posting on a thread here at the same time. I do NOT want to argue about this, and I'm not being "nosey". I don't want to convince anybody that what they're doing is wrong, or right. I just want to understand. I'm thinking possibly I'm missing out on some opportunities here that I am not aware of.

I would be totally happy if I get some reasonable explanations, from anyone who can understand the reasons......... not just the ones who hide their online status. I'm not picking on anybody in particular. I haven't, and won't, mention any names. But, the old cliche' "Hit dog hollers" does come to mind.

Hopefully “The Greyman” will chime in.

That, for sure, is WGAF.

Paris? Detroit? I guess the gang tag is a bit more artistic in Detroit.
