This is a must watch as it is quite amazing what does and doesn't cause a barrel to blow. And much to my surprise and talked about in the video is where the barrels blew.

Wanted a pair of blow up barrels to take to a show . So we took an old 2&1,2" gun stuffed some paper in the barrels ,loaded it with a 2&3/4" cartridge , stuck the ends into the ground next to a fence post which we taped the gun to .
Pulled the trigger with a long string and the gunshot near 4 feet into the air .
Took us three attempts .
By contrasts a 20 bore that had just passed re-proof was returned to us a week or so later with the end blow off in normal use .

Very interesting.But it brings up more questions than it answers.

Very interesting, but the old rule of just because it didn't blow up for someone else there is no guarantee it won't for you.

Is it safe? You don’t know the next shell goes bang. You can do any number of stupid things to make them go badly. But with proper loads your odds are very good. Otherwise we all will be counting to ten with our shoes off.

Does anybody really measure powder?
