A long time ago I watched a gunsmith use a bag of shot to bend a A5 barrel. Owner fell and bent the barrel to one side. All the smith did was slam the barrel across the bag of shot several times. Judged progress by eye and then when he was close checked the POI. If I recall he charged him $5.00 for the job. Long time ago as I said. The barrel would have cost about $60-100.00 to replace so the owner was happy.

Researcher- marked “CC” and a Damascus barreled gun.

Re: bends
I agree and understand about the stories told above. In all reality, I would consider bending them myself in some scenarios. I do want to stress this was freakishly visible and extreme in every sense. I also omitted that I suspected two cracks in the barrels as well. They went to Brad Bachelder, and I do not remember specifics, but I remember I was not given options, assessment, or quotes, but was simply told “NO”

Even now I look at the photos longingly. I find it to be exactly my taste- less the trash barrel issue!

I don't know why some guns are marked CC. My gun is marked C. I have saved some pictures of 3832.C it is stamped CC on the watertable and has the half-pistol grip.

Baltimore Arms, out of all of the American makers, had the most interesting details on their stocks. The person who did it was a fine craftsman. Three of the pics below are details of a C Grade, while the picture of the elaborate wrist decoration is a D Grade.

I bought a Sarasquetta at an auction that was liquidating the stock from a gun shop hit by hurricane Sandy. It's a 20ga with 26" barrels and a beaver tail forend. The stock was missing and the barrels were bent up. They were bent up about the diameter of the barrels. The barrels had some rust but the side lock frame was mostly devoid of any rust and has about 90% color. No one wanted it and I got it for a song. I built a yoke on my fab table and used a porta power to straighten them. Before I started I was pretty sure the rib would pop or the barrels would separate. But one thing going for it is that this tube set is brazed instead of soldered. When straightening steel you have to push past where you want it because there is always some spring back. So you have to go thru a number of push and check it cycles to get where you want to be. Now the gun has an English walnut stock and rust blued barrels and is not to bad of a little shotgun no one wanted. I can only imagine what happened to it to get in that condition. It's to bad some one didn't try and straighten that Baltimore Arms. I learned something with this 20ga and I would not hesitate to do it again if the need arises.
